I would like my kids to go to school on Columbus/IP Day and Veterans Day.

That’s nice. Not happening though.

Yup. The wealthy have won this one by complaining about paying for camps during days off. They really don’t care about that issue, they can fund camps in the summer AND during the school year. They are fake arguing for the poors to get a longer summer. I guess that way they can take 2 big vacations instead of one?

As a poor myself, I appreciate the shorter summers and fewer camps, but the squeaky wheel is very loud from the vacation people.

I think those most vocal for longer summers are swim parents and parents of high school athletes.

For traveling, we’d prefer more week long breaks throughout the year. We’re fine with a shorter summer.

It's also far more affordable to pay for one full week of summer camp vs 5 scattered days of day camp. The cheapest day camp near me is $60/day but I pay $200 for a full week of summer camp.

I can handle splitting the random days with my husband and skip camps for those days, so it is much easier for me to have those.

The scattered weeks of summer camp are confusing for everyone. One week soccer, the next art with different drop offs and pick ups. It is not my favorite. I just want a shorter summers and I don’t think that is too much to ask either.

Can't you just alternate days or weeks with your husband during the summer if you don't want to send your child/ren to camp? That said camp is good for entertaining your child/ren during the summer while they probably don't get that on a random day at home especially with homework to do. It's a pain that camp is expensive and I symphonize with that but your child/ren should get entertained on a regular basis.

No we can’t rotate because 5 days spread out over the year is much fewer than 8 weeks of summer vacation. Can we do that for one week? Maybe, but it is easier to be off work a day here and there than it is MWF of a straight week. This is how work works.

I am cool with boredom at home and think it may be good to have a rest day now and then to chill. Why do you think being constantly “entertained” is a good thing? Kids are people, not circus animals.

They used to go on Veterans Day.

I let my kids stay home in June except for days that seem meaningful...honestly. Nobody cares about attendance overall and if I know they're not learning anymore I'd rather they be reading and playing than sitting in class on FCPS laptops.

And my kids are upper ES, MS, and HS BTW.

Our kids go to the same camp for almost the entire summer. It's at our local community center so it's affordable.

To me, it's not about having a long summer, it's about not having a random Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday off every other week. It's disruptive for the kids. I work from home, my kids are old enough to entertain themselves, but even they say they prefer to have long weekends than go to school for 2 days, get a day off, then go back for a day.

Playing with who, all their friends are at school. I’d rather send my kids to school to socialize and do some structured activities than sit at home for days on end.

Upper ES teacher. Your kid will be missing content if they stay home in June. We have paced out the rest of the year and kids will have new content through June with exception of last three days.

Give it up. They are never going to have school on Columbus Day. It’s been a school holiday for over 25 years. lol.

They are voting Thursday and school board seems to support this change.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t. It isn’t a religious day, nobody does anything to celebrate it. An absolutely pointless day off. Loudoun goes on Veterans Day so honestly both of those days should be back on the table for both districts. There is no legit reason to have them off.

FCPS went to school on Veterans Day until fairly recently. They used to do nice assemblies and performances that day and many parents would be able to attend.
