School Boundary Change-Woodward HS

I grew up in Old Farm and one of my friend’s older brothers was in the last class to graduate from Woodward. Everyone panicked back then about having the neighborhood rezoned for WJ. I predict everyone will be just fine.

Yes, but the neighborhood only went up in value after Woodward closed, despite all the hand-wringing.

Two houses for sale in Old Farm, contingent and pending, 27 and 18 days on the market. Priced slightly lower than average about 10-15% less.

Woodward will be a vastly different school than WJ.

Downward pressure will be there for sure. No one will pay the same price for attending WJ and Woodward if other things are equal.

+1

WJ had 5-10% discount to Whitman despite being a very good school.

Woodward to WJ gap will be far beigger.

Yes, especially given that WJ will no longer be overcrowded, which is the main issue with it right now. It will be on par with Whitman and Churchill.

WJ was the most crowded place my kid ever was in (I'll add that he is not a concert goer). It is a great school! Removing the overcrowding will only improve the experience. Cannot wait for Woodward to open up. Crazy that it opening just to be a holding school for years. Only in MoCo.

What do you mean?

After years and years of overcrowding at WJ, like no one saw that coming, Woodward school "opened" but only as a holding school. Not as a school available to those who should be attending it, as a brand new school, in a more timely manner. Hope that helps.

And you think WJ kids should have been there before Northwood kids? You would be wrong. Northwood re-opened in 2002 with paint and a prayer and it was a disaster. Those kids, in that community, needed a new school before the overcrowded WJ kids. Yes, really. As a reminder, MCPS has to do what's best for all the kids, not just yours. And yes, my kids are at WJ and I know what the over-crowding brings.

Be careful what you wish for. As WJ shrinks, and before it becomes overcrowded again through ongoing development, the wide-range of course selection will shrink

I don't think some people understand what its like having limited course offerings.

Have you stopped to consider that the housing prices are overinflated and at some point they'd start to decline anyway, as sellers keep pricing a bit higher and there is only so much the market can take and only so many people can or will buy a million-dollar house. Many people in the past few years have lost jobs, some quickly got new jobs, some are struggling. Many in those million-dollar homes aer stretching. There is only so much higher the market can go before its to reduce, especially given the interest rates. Our neighborhood which isn't impacted, is having houses sit too, even the more affordable ones.

I think you are right, it will all be fine. Woodward will be another W school.

They will learn as the population shrinks

This is actually shocking. Such a rapid process discount due to the Superintendent’s proposal. We all thought it might happen, but seeing it actually happen is something else.

A 10-15% price discount is a huge hit for us, especially as we near retirement age. But I guess this will be someone else’s windfall.

Are houses around WJ getting a bump up of 10-15% now that they will be Whitman 2.0?

It is just a small data point. And it could be for other factors. There are other Tilden MS real estate movements in the last two weeks that were quite regular.

And the whole WJ region experienced slow down in the last 6 months.

I wouldn't overreact. The area has many good things going on, other than HS that will end up being 7 or 8 out of 10 instead of 9/10 currently.
