Yes! People make it seem like Usha is a poor unfortunate soul who is being manipulated by JD. If anything, Usha has the upper hand, and it would be interesting to see what her true intentions are. I don't trust her any more than I trust JD. She is definitely ruthless and cutthroat.

I went to YLS. It is a small place without a lot of dating options plus a feeling that you’re sort of in a close community together. I’m pretty sure they were in the same “small group” which is a group of about 10 students that have one first semester small group class together plus all their first semester classes together so naturally bond and form study groups together. Marriages from small group are not uncommon. I think maybe Jed or Amy was their small group professor and it’s not uncommon for small group professors to host get together and such. Anyway you spend three years with the same group of like 200 people and it’s very insular and everyone is doing the same things and having lots of intellectual conversations, so I think it makes for some pairings that you might not see in a normal world.

The addition of the Amy Chua and her creepy husband, Jed, to the Usha and JD Vance pairing is a weird example of how sexually toxic even the highest, most educated echelons of America are. Depressing that even highly educated men are encouraged to value their female partners for their utility value in terms of what the woman can do to increase the man’s professional value and highly educated women are encouraged to “sell” themselves to prospectively successful men instead of investing in their own professional success.

YLS is super toxic but not sexually so. There’s really not that much sex happening. Jed is gross, yes, but there are really not people trading on sexuality at YLS and my understanding from professors was that Bill (when he attended a million years ago) was barely there. Hillary was the studious one. There’s a lot of distinction at YlS and a lot of people with stunted social skills but the people insisting that Jed/amy had them in an arranged marriage for political gain are just way off mark. It is a world in which many people are lonely, many people have not had the oppprtinity to have a lot of other relationships, and most people are actually genuinely attracted to people’s intellect. Jed and Amy play match maker with the judiciary and other power brokers but they arent pairing off students as some power play. Some people will naturally pair off in that environment. I am convinced their relationship was genuine.
Whether they still are in the same headspace years later, after three kids, two major moves,two major job changes, a religious conversion, and a major change in personality/outlokk, I don’t know. A lot of women in her situation would feel very disoriented in those circumstances, but she doesn’t seem to. Maybe it’s clear she’ll get her judicial appointment — God knows they’ve pushed through people who were less qualified.

Thank you for adding your more-informed opinion. I agree she’s not power hungry, she’s disappointed in JD, and is sending a message by not wearing ring at public event. She’s still Second Lady, whether contemplating divorce or not.
