Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban split

There's a lot Kidman can be criticized for (fair or not) but to even suggest she abandoned her children with TC means you know absolutely nothing about the cult he is in.

If you look at older pictures of her she often has a striking, aggressive stare....and she was often not smiling. I think there is an intensity there that she covers over and I actually wonder if this is probably more of who she is. I've also always wondered about her desire to play psychopathic characters, she's played a few. I may get laughed off the board, but I don't think she is quite right. And the announcement coming on a Monday versus a Friday as well as the statement that she did not want this and he left her suggests she may be feeling vindictive.

Right - the fact that she abandoned the children she adopted shows this.

She didn’t abandon them at all. They belong to a creepy cult that taught them from the day they were born that they had to shun anyone who left the cult. That’s very different and heartbreaking.

DO. She didn’t go to court and fight for custody, more less visitation. Yeah, she abandoned them and used the religion as an excuse to a judge would have granted visitation and she could have nurtured her relationship regardless of Scientology. And if Tom or Scientology had interfered with that relationship, a judge would have given her custody. She didn’t even try.

This always did seem odd. Katie Holmes sure managed to keep her kid with Tom Cruise.

Katie learned from what happened to Nicole and she was smart about getting her ducks in a row. She clearly was smart about not giving up anything blackmail worthy on the sessions she had, and she kept receipts to use against them and Tom. When Nicole was married to him, that was before all the Leah remini and other exposes. I remember thinking they were weird but having no idea about the machine. They clearly had stuff on her and would have at least destroyed her career. So one could say she chose her career over the kids, but it’s unclear — maybe they were threatening something worse than just career destructions. Now that her kids are grown and she has so much power, wish she’d just be honest about what happened — what can they do to her at this point?

That's not true and shows you know nothing about it. She's got some years left for female lead roles until her face looks too old. And that's what she's aiming for. Longevity at the top. Then she's in line for the extra awards like "the entire body of work" and "exceptional contribution to the art". Which the men get a lot more than the women... BECAUSE intelligent male actors have more longevity on the job than intelligent female actresses. And after that, if she's VERY lucky, roles will dry up but if she doesn't get dementia or die from cancer, she might join the rarities like Judi Dench or Maggie Smith.

If this is what she wants, you shouldn't denigrate that, PP. Women are allowed to seek out these things.

Nicole is different though. She likes (and produces) those weird indie like projects. She'll always find roles and projects to take on. That's why most of her new projects aren't very good. I don't think it has anything to do with her chasing longevity and has more to do with her being a workaholic.

I don't think Nicole's projects are very "indie." It's mostly glossy, soapy crap for streaming these days.

Yes, I’ve read about that cult and it’s a crazy one. A kid must estrange their parent if one chooses to leave the sect.

That means there is a high demand for this.

She's probably like a Joan Crawford or a Bette Davis....difficult and lives for being "an actress" and ARTIST. Just an intuition. Additionally, she said she was blindsided with Cruise divorce as well. She uses her PR machine like a pro after decades in the business and she learned it from Cruise and has honed it to top levels ever since. That's in part why she appears stilted and brittle as a pp said. Because part of her is and additionally she is highly controlled and guarded, like actresses were in the days where they were under the studios. It's just looks like a lot of bullsh*t, lots of energy spent being a celebrity but then in interviews scoffs about how she is an artist...can't imagine living with someone this self absorbed. Maybe he just got tired of it or became involved with someone available and real.

I think there's a lot of truth to this. But not in any way abusive, I think she's incredibly loving to her family (except for being away nonstop and now whatever the break was with KU). I think she's insatiable to the point of a debilitating mental illness and probably narcissistic. She's mentioned in interviews the constant yearning and therefore never satisfied, despite enormous success (and probably unbearable sadness that so many of her projects were clunkers). She says she "feels things deeply." It presents as her being a workaholic but I think it's much deeper (and worse) and makes her actually extremely needy to those around her and ultimately very hard to love. She's also taken the death of her parents extremely hard.
I'm disappointed her PR is working so hard to get ahead of the story. I would have expected the "quiet" separate lives rather than her media blitz while he's on tour and had a concert last night (and coming here next week, BTW).
And that's my opinion coming from a fan of both of them.

They separated in 2001, and their children were still very young at the time. Years later, she publicly stated they’d chosen not to live with her, but they were under age 10 at the time of the divorce.

This particular cult is known for threatening, harassing, and harming people who leave. We will never know what was going on behind the scenes. Their father likely poisoned them against her when she left, and that’s a powerful influence. I don’t know Nicole Kidman and, unlike a lot of people on this thread, I don’t feel like I can judge her as a parent. But I’ve always thought that situation with her other kids was not her doing.

So she willingly and knowingly brought those kids into a cult and then walked away without so much as a fight. She didn’t even try.

I never thought she even wanted those kids.

It's always seemed weird to me, that she was seemingly able to walk away from being their mother. As PP noted, would she do that with her two girls with Urban?

I think you have no idea to to speculate is really awful

And the AMC ads are HorRIBLE. [/quot

I think she seems like a nice person but I confess I’ve always been a little mystified why people think she’s such a great actor. I actually like her better in light roles — at least before all the plastic surgery she had sort of a natural charm and a sparkling smile. But her “serious” roles always come off to me as slightly off, which I guess works in a role where she’s playing someone slightly off, but it seems very one note.

I think if she can find her comedy note she could transition into a Maggie smith type older lady with a withering state type role as she ages. Of course she won’t be Maggie smith but there’s a space for older women who can play imperious.

If they focus on their careers, they are criticized for not spending enough time at home with their kids.

If they focus on raising their family, they automatically lose out on the best professional opportunities.

Men are not subject to the same criticism, and gaily go about their careers while their wives raise the kids and mommy-track or stay home.

I don't think any of us should criticize Nicole for wanting to be the most famous actress she can be. Yes there is a family cost. Men do that all the time.

I stay home to raise my kids, but I will never criticize a woman for prioritizing her career.

Well said, pp. Our society hates women and even have women tearing each other down

hilarious (although SNL was mimicking/mocking real life events - I'd seen video clips of movie theater doing this salute and lip synching her lines before the skit was done)
