New school start times survey

Or believe the hype that apparently there are only a couple golden hours a day when any child can focus. And most teachers will quit. And kids won't be able to do sports or have fun anymore. 🙄

+1 All the hysteria over 30 minutes, too. lol.

no freaking way do elementary parents want their kids starting at almost 10am. that is so late. little kids learn better early. they will be in school until almost 5

This has been pointed out multiple times to Gatehouse. And yet they keep coming back to ask about this option. They clearly are leaning towards this option. I guess they don’t care about families or teachers at those schools.

Well they should care. I currently teach at a late ES and by 3:45, all I can do is a read aloud cause my kids are done. No kid will be effectively learning till 4:35. When kids are not making adequate progress because they aren’t available for learning, maybe they will care.

So now you’ll just do your read aloud and maybe a snack at 4:00 pm. Chill.

No, there will not necessarily be childcare where there is a demand. Many of the business that offer aftercare do so because they are a business that has afterschool activities like karate or coding classes. It makes sense that they can open a few hours earlier and give workers a decent chunk of hours. To offer before care, those businesses would need to find workers to come in for, at max, a 3 hour shift. And then close again until the afternoon.

actually some do. yes. there are the 9-5 parents but there are also many parents whose jobs don’t allow them home in time for bedtime so idea of being able to spend more morning hours would be amazing! and for some parents that do after care, later school can be better too. for those parents and others, they’d be happy with later times and even happier if later times mean some families move/go private to get smaller class sizes

In this area, I’ve got to believe that there are far fewer parents that don’t get home for bedtime and have time in the AM vs. those that work during those morning hours.

The read aloud will start at the same time when kids are tired and last longer. The point was that 9-15 is already ridiculous. So it's not just 30 mins plus it's 30 mins on top of already suboptimal schedule.

Based off my kids schedule this year, this would be his schedule with a 30 minute pushback.

10:00-11:00 -Specials
11:00-11:20-Morning Meeting
11:20-12:40- Math
12:40-1:10- Intervention
1:10-1:40- Content
1:40-2:10- Recess
2:10-2:40-Lunch
2:40-4:35- Lang Arts

I don’t think any parent would want this schedule for their kids.

Agree. PP is clueless. Read Aloud would start at 3:45 and 45 mins would be wasted on not getting through the actual content we are trying to teach.

Also, nothing to keep people from submitting multiple surveys from different devices or lying about who are when completing-odd to me.

School times affect peoples' commutes.

When changes are 1/2 hour increments?

Yes. I currently leave my 4:05 end time school around 4:20. The days I leave even 10 mins later, my commute is longer.

You’ll either have to accept a longer commute or move to a school closer to you. It’s simple.

Yes, but when 40 percent of teachers live in other counties, it makes FCPS less desirable to teach. The second pension won’t be worth it. There will be large staffing issues and dedicated teachers who have been at schools for years may choose to leave. But if you are okay with your kid having a less experienced teacher, continue pushing for a change that will have very little benefit for most stakeholders and students.

Parent of a new 7th grader here (my first). I know a lot of parents and literally NONE of them want middle school start times to change to the 9:30 - 4:00 option. Most of them don't want to change to the 8:00pm option at the expense of elementary schoolers. I want them to keep everything as is.

There is no such thing. It’s 8 am, dear.

Does anyone else think that FCPS is looking to create problems rather than solve them?

Y'all know that there is a way to make this work so no one starts after 9am, right? ELIMINATE BUSSING FOR AAP CENTERS

I'll say it again ELLIMINATE BUSSING FOR AAP CENTERS. They are a choice school. There shouldn't be busses for choice schools. That will free up busses for middle schools.

Where is that stat? I’m not debating, just curious.

I don’t 100% disagree with your proposal, but I don’t know that eliminating AAP bussing would free up enough buses to start MS later without messing with ES or HS start times. Happy to be wrong though.

It would be nice for them to model the scenarios. And to see if any of these hour+ routes can be mitigated. A 7:30 start isn’t as tenuous when the bus comes at 7:00 rather than 6:15.
