Now, coudl it do a better job of finding the kids from each school that are great at STEM and will flourish - even if they haven't devoted 8 yeras to beyond-school math and/or parent-driven Olympiad stuff? Yes. But if it's a black / white choice of the old system vs the new system....new system is better since kids who are highly talented at STEM but haven't had parents coaching them on outside STEM ECs / tutoring for years deserve a shot too.

The thing is the new selection process has no way of knowing if they are “highly talented” at STEM.

Just use a metric that's based on many tests where all students are prepared by the system like say grades.

You seen to think only highly coached kids were getting into TJ. This isn't true. Any of them were highly accelerated, but plenty took geometry in 8th grade. This is available at every fcps middle school or a magnet middle school serving the area.

You seem to think you can identify the storm kids better than a standardized test can. You can't. Standardized tests are better at selecting the best students that just about any other method we have ever devised

You seem to think kids can become stem focused in 8th grade and keep up. They can't. My kid is not competing against those kids, it's already too late for them. My kid is trying to compete against the kids in China and India. That's where the competition is and all these misguided attempts to pass over our best and brightest because you think some other group should be getting the educational opportunities will harm us all.

I know you don't want to hear this but the best and brightest kids need to be comfortable doing things like Singapore math by the time they are in 4th grade and if they can't hack it, them they will likely be mid level stem professionals of they follow that path. That might fix some of the income gap but it wasn't going to affect the race gap. You would just be replacing wealthy white and Asians with poor Asians. You would likely end up with even more Asians. This is not goal.

TJ class of 2024 had less than 1% kids from low-income families. In an area with over 1/3rd low-income families.

The class of 2022 (the first year of quant q) had 1.5% FARM. why didn't the elimination of test prep make any difference in the quantity of FARM admits? Because it's not money that is keeping them out. It's 8 years of unenriched education. If your kids had been picking his nose for 8 years and mine has been doing Singapore math for 8 years, then all things being equal, my kid eats you kids lunch academically.

Now, coudl it do a better job of finding the kids from each school that are great at STEM and will flourish - even if they haven't devoted 8 yeras to beyond-school math and/or parent-driven Olympiad stuff? But if it's a black / white choice of the old system vs the new system....new system is better since kids who are highly talented at STEM but haven't had parents coaching them on outside STEM ECs / tutoring for years deserve a shot too.

That might fix some of the income gap but it wasn't going to affect the race gap. You would just be replacing wealthy white and Asians with poor Asians. You would likely end up with even more Asians. This is not goal.

TJ class of 2024 had less than 1% kids from low-income families. In an area with over 1/3rd low-income families.

You seen to think only highly coached kids were getting into TJ. This isn't true. Any of them were highly accelerated, but plenty took geometry in 8th grade. This is available at every fcps middle school or a magnet middle school serving the area.

You seem to think you can identify the storm kids better than a standardized test can. You can't. Standardized tests are better at selecting the best students that just about any other method we have ever devised

You seem to think kids can become stem focused in 8th grade and keep up. They can't. My kid is not competing against those kids, it's already too late for them. My kid is trying to compete against the kids in China and India. That's where the competition is and all these misguided attempts to pass over our best and brightest because you think some other group should be getting the educational opportunities will harm us all.

I support the changes becuase I think it's crazy that a kid should need to do "Singapore math for 8 years" to have a shot at getting into TJ...and agree that the race imbalances drove the changes. But the best reason for keeping them isn't racial balancing. It's to slow down the ridiculous arms race of "Singapore math for 8 years" in kid's ES and MS outside cramming. Now, coudl it do a better job of finding the kids from each school that are great at STEM and will flourish - even if they haven't devoted 8 yeras to beyond-school math and/or parent-driven Olympiad stuff? Yes. But if it's a black / white choice of the old system vs the new system....new system is better since kids who are highly talented at STEM but haven't had parents coaching them on outside STEM ECs / tutoring for years deserve a shot too.

You seen to think only highly coached kids were getting into TJ. This isn't true. Any of them were highly accelerated, but plenty took geometry in 8th grade. This is available at every fcps middle school or a magnet middle school serving the area.

You seem to think you can identify the storm kids better than a standardized test can. You can't. Standardized tests are better at selecting the best students that just about any other method we have ever devised

You seem to think kids can become stem focused in 8th grade and keep up. They can't. My kid is not competing against those kids, it's already too late for them. My kid is trying to compete against the kids in China and India. That's where the competition is and all these misguided attempts to pass over our best and brightest because you think some other group should be getting the educational opportunities will harm us all.

I know you don't want to hear this but the best and brightest kids need to be comfortable doing things like Singapore math by the time they are in 4th grade and if they can't hack it, them they will likely be mid level stem professionals of they follow that path. The kid that are succeeding at TJ are the ones that would have gotten in under a training regime.

Singapore math costs like $30.

This mentality of having to specialize for years in advance to be competitive for TJ is another key reason why they changed the process.

It's not specialization and it's not to be competitive for TJ, it's just academic training. The the academic training is to be competitive for the world. Income gaps are only going to widen and your kids are going to get caught on the wrong side of that gap if you don't think there is room for academic rigor in childhood. You can have a childhood and learn math, these things are not mutually exclusive. My kid isn't even trying to compete with your kid. The competition is global.
