Do you keep a baseball bat by your bed?

First, I keep 3 throwing stars/shuriken on the nightstand to throw at any intruder. Then, they get charged at with my XL mag light in hand to fight in close quarters.

If that fails, I tell my wife to grab the bat to double-team the intruder. If they're not dead by then, I yell for the kids to get the shotgun to finish them off.

I haven't had any issues with intruders since instituting my plan.

did you have a lot of issues before your plan?

I keep a machete under my bed. I live in a safe area and have an alarm. It makes me feel bad ass.

No, the room is too small. No room to swing.

You should not fight back; it’s not worth your life.

If you don’t fight back then it’s your life you lose in certain instances also. Never let a perp take you to a second location, if they want to kill you they will either way. You atleast have. A moments chance before it happens.

But, what if they just want your money, like from a ATM? (and they want to let you go, unharmed, afterwards? ).

The longer they spend with you the more likely you will be able to identify them. Don’t let them take you to the atm. Scream, kick, draw attention at location 1.

The jump between willingness to rob and steal and willingness to kill is pretty big. Most people who break into your home are not looking to kill you and most really, really don't even want you to know they're in the house. It makes their job a lot harder and it makes the punishment, if caught, much bigger.

If you wake up in the night and are aware someone is in your home—unless you're a VIP or have some terrible enemy whose main option for getting even is murder (suggesting you, yourself, may also be up to no good)—they almost certainly don't want to hurt you. Lock yourself securely somwhere and call the police.

A panic room is a much more reasonable option than a gun by your bed.

I’ve lived in countries where that’s common and it still isn’t a deterrent. Desperate people will continue to steal because they lack other viable alternatives. And criminal organizations will never run out of desperate people they can trap into stealing for them.

In one case, my landlord caught a young man stealing from a storage area of our building. The young man had a disabled mother and two younger siblings. He did day labor every day, but it wasn’t covering their basic living expenses. The only other option was selling his body (prostitution) or selling drugs. Both of those had a higher risk of death than getting caught stealing so he took the chance. We gave some money and food to his family but I went back to the States so I don’t know his ultimate fate.

The one certain, effective, and humane manner to address inequality driving so-called “crime” is a lack of full wrap-around services to those in need.

No one actually wants to commit a crime; they are driven to it by desperation and lack of resources.

LOL tell that to my parents who had their home broken into in a tony NYC suburb by my high school peers living in 5 million dollar homes. Losers all but "desperation and lack of resources" had nothing to do with it.

what you're describing is anecdotal evidence.

that's not an accurate description of almost anyone who commits robbery.

No. Most likely I would trip over it. I have a dog.

No, have a cute little dog who looks super mean and barks. Of course if you walk up to her and pet her she's happy and quiet.

I slept with a sledgehammer under my bed when I lived in the 'hood right after college because it was all I could afford.

You thought the robber would think you're just a construction worker doing some demo work and there's nothing of value?

The PPs who are so against having a gun for self defense are hilarious:

Bats and golf clubs are ok, but no one should have a gun to protect themselves!

Do no harm to the criminal breaking into your house because he had no other options!

If someone does break in, there is a chance he doesn’t want to kill you!

Gun owners are obese!

Gun owners are stupid!

When I got my machete, my area was not safe and we didn’t have an alarm. I don’t think it has ever made me feel bad ass, but it did make me feel safer as a divorced mom before I started cohabitating with my now DH.

But seriously, who do you imagine you're actually going to shoot?
