I’ve lived in countries where that’s common and it still isn’t a deterrent. Desperate people will continue to steal because they lack other viable alternatives. And criminal organizations will never run out of desperate people they can trap into stealing for them.

In one case, my landlord caught a young man stealing from a storage area of our building. The young man had a disabled mother and two younger siblings. He did day labor every day, but it wasn’t covering their basic living expenses. The only other option was selling his body (prostitution) or selling drugs. Both of those had a higher risk of death than getting caught stealing so he took the chance. We gave some money and food to his family but I went back to the States so I don’t know his ultimate fate.[/quote]

LOL tell that to my parents who had their home broken into in a tony NYC suburb by my high school peers living in 5 million dollar homes. Losers all but "desperation and lack of resources" had nothing to do with it. [/quote]
