I had a friend who was a longtime criminal defense lawyer with PDS, and he also said that, based on his client's information,
dogs are the best deterrent. They are unpredictable and at least career criminals like predictability. Unclear whether the random person camping in your yard thinks the same way.

Also most people simply are not frightened by a single dog. Now 10-20 wolves, rotweillers over 100lbs, etc. sure, that's dangerous. One dog, nope.
