Amazon Prime - kicking the habit

Question about Target and Walmart. What are the reasons to not switch my shopping to those companies over amazon?

What about these stores?
Giant
Trader Joe's
CVS
Walgreens
Home Goods/TJ Maxx
Dicks Sporting Goods

I think with Costco and the commissary/px, these places could replace almost all of my amazon shopping.

EXCEPT, my kindle. I've used them for over a decade. I rarely buy kindle books, mainly use the library or free classics, but the device itself feels indispensable to me. Any good alternatives? Maybe I'll ask on the book thread.

Target - recently cut its DEI programs. Should they bring them back, I personally will resume shopping there because I think they paid and treated workers OK.
Walmart - generally poor treatment of workers, predatory pricing in small towns, cheap/dangerous products. Also their website has a lot of third party stuff and likely fakes.

Giant is mostly unionized and I think negotiates with the union so I feel like that one is OK

Others I don't really have an opinion on, I would say they are all preferable to Amazon.

Target and Trader Joe’s are both anti union but I shop there anyway because they have a reputation for treating workers slightly better and being more progressive generally (for instance Target has Pride products every year and often features new minority owned businesses).

Giant and Safeway are both unionized so I shop there rather than Amazon or Harris teeter.

I used to boycott Walmart for the reasons PP said but it’s still miles ahead of Amazon.

I also recently discovered that Macy’s now has a same day delivery option. We had to go to a funeral and I was able to get a very nice suit delivered same day for just $5. Lots of places also have in store pickup that is pretty convenient for same day or next day.

Yes this. It's also so funny when people talk about how committed they are to their ideals and then say they allow themselves certain products anyway cause you know, I can't allow myself to totally suffer!! It's so fake. It's not the ideal of punishing a company I really think it's just about not consuming so much and that's OK. It's great to want to stop buying so much. But know that making things harder is dumb. Keep life easy. Buy less instead. But don't kid yourself - your ability to make the company suffer is much less that you suffering. And I guarantee that mere mortals cannot long term cut themselves away from things they really really want. Never underestimate the power of desire. So just say - I'm going to try to buy less v I want to make life as difficult as possible by boycotting places that may make my life easier!

And you can’t order the same things form other sources because…?

Often they need things on the same day. I'm not getting rid of Amazon.

You do not need anything same day. Please explain what you could possibly need same day that is worth giving up our democracy for.

So my only choices are same day delivery or giving up democracy?

Seriously, do better. This a complete logic fail.

You didn't answer the question. Give an example of something you absolutely NEED that you can't go pick up in a store.

How do I know the store has it?

With Amazon, I can browse in the leisure of my home and have it delivered to my doorstep in a time and manner of my choosing.

Feel free to drive around like a chicken with your head cut off. It must be exhausting to be a liberal.

They are union busters. Do you support worker’s rights?

Like...the American workers that have to pee in bottles on the Amazon floor? Those workers?

Umm, that’s my point. Amazon does not support workers rights.

Don’t argue with MAGA. They love to fight and can’t be reasoned with. Keep doing good things. Take the energy that you use to fight with Maga and make connections in your community.

Yes, please keep wasting your time on performative meaningless gestures. Makes the delivery times shorter for the rest of us.

I shop for organic food at Mom's market and get deliveries from South Mountain Creamery. Aldi for other staples.

Books from the library
Local hardware store over Home Depot

For clothes, I shop consignment stores or Poshmark. Exceptions for underwear and socks from Nordstrom.

All it takes to quit Amazon is wanting to.
Once you quit, you start to find all kinds of substitutes. Many, many businesses are competing successfully with Amazon now, offering free shipping, one-day shipping, loads of reviews on their websites, etc.
Once I quit Amazon, I started enjoying online shopping. There are lots of really cool websites to explore, and some great products that you can't buy on Amazon. I don't buy any crap now, and I have more money since quitting Amazon.

Still can't do it huh. Name one. Single. Thing. You need same day. Hint: there isn't anything.

I have bought so much at Home Depot that I don't have a delivery fee and they have same day delivery. We get things from Amazon
almost everyday.

I ripped off the band-aid a few days ago, all at once. No more Prime, no more Audible, no more Kindle Unlimited - all of which I am addicted to - and no more Whole Foods. Also, no more Facebook or Instagram. Of course I hope Bezos and Zuckerberg take notice but this is really about me. I don't want to support them anymore. I should have quit long ago but it took this awful month to get so fed up that I am finally doing it.

Nobody cares Nancy. You're not really making a difference like you think you are.

I'm not the one who can't answer a simple question. Lol what a little whiny baby snowflake b**ch you are. I hope you get everything you voted for.

Anonymous wrote:I am very dependent on the convenience of using Amazon. Everything I need gets shipped to me on a regular cadence. This helps because it’s one less thing I need to remember when running low on supplies.

I just paused my subscription so it will not renew in July. I found a few products directly through the manufacturer who also provide subscription shipping for cheaper. I still need to break my habit and find other vendors who carry my products. I hate being inside brick and mortar stores.

How have you been able to kick your Amazon habit?

Stopped all non essential shopping and all online shopping 40 days ago—no amazon, Target etc. I don’t miss it a bit. Plan to continue indefinitely.
