Are people canceling summer vacations or not really that concerned yet?

We just got back from the Miami area to see my snowbird parents. We are gloomy about the immediate future so wanted one last fun week away before hunkering down. Kids are toddlers so went before prices skyrocketed for spring break.

We put off booking a trip to Europe to see DH’s parents this summer and are planning a driving vacation - thinking the Cape, Berkshires, Lake George, or White Mountains.

The bulk of our trips are paid with points and miles so we'll keep traveling as long as we can with those.

Just want to say I’m so sorry that so many peoe are dealing with this uncertainty. I think it’s always important to have emergency funds available should anything arise.

We’ve never been able to afford vacations. This year is no different.

We’re postponing. DH is a fed and I can’t support the household on my salary alone. If his job survives, we’ll book something for October.

We were planning to go to Europe for spring break but hadn’t purchased airfare or made any non-refundable plans yet (though we had done an extensive amount of planning). We decide to cancel both to save money and because I would feel uncomfortable as an American abroad right now.

How would everyone know you’re American? Are you wearing American flag clothing? People always seem to worry about this, but in my experience no one can tell where you’re from. We were just in Switzerland and were mistaken for other nationalities multiple times.

BS. Americans stick out even without opening their mouths. We traveled internationally during dumpster fire #1 and we got asked about trump many times.

In Italy a few years ago, an old Italian man working at our hotel, said “God bless your President Trump.” I couldn’t tell if he was serious, so we just smiled and quickly changed subjects.

I would wager anyone posting on this forum has emergency savings. But it’s one thing to have them in semi-normal stable times and still enjoy things like travel and quite another to be planning for potential job loss in a topsy turvy world in which you might legitimately need to start dipping into them for expenses. Nobody really thinks about the scary part when you start living off the emergency fund and now the emergency fund is slowly decreasing and perhaps not there in the event of a future emergency.

We were planning a summer trip but have put those plans on hold. Not buying plane tickets in the current situation. We are a one income family with a probational fed job. If things work out, we will do a trip that requires less planning and/or is cheaper… like driving somewhere & camping.

Exactly. We have an emergency fund but it doesn’t cover trips to Europe.

Wow… did you actually listen to the speech?

DP, please read news outside the US. The reaction to his speech by all of Europe and beyond is frightening if you’re an American.

What? Do you think Europe may actually decide they need to participate in their own defense? You think that’s a problem?

We've booked lots of travel. Stocks are going to the moon right now.

Between other countries hating us right now, fear of the economy turning bad, and all the firinga at the FAA, we have decided to postpone travel for now.

No.

If you’re a Fed, that’s another perk that shouldn’t be. They should be donated to vetted charities.
