Will USAID really be permanently shut down?

One of the affidavits filed with the USAID lawsuit is from a 7-month pregnant foreign service officer whose entire medical plan for the birth of her child and care of her younger children has been thrown out the door. I can't imagine what this woman's life has been like the last couple of weeks, hope she's OK.

I grew up in another part of Virginia and had literally NO CLUE about the US Fed Gov machine until after I graduated college. Even after living here 20 years I still barely understand most of the agencies. And I vote D! Imagine how the out of state R's must feel.

I graduated with a poli sci degree. When I went to work for the federal government, very little of what I learned was helpful to me. Maybe if I had gone into public administration, it would've been a different experience.

I think you need to be inside the government to make sense of it, and even better to have experience across multiple agencies. At that point, there is a base of knowledge to make sense out of most things in the government, the agencies, processes, regulations, etc. It still requires a lot of reading and research, but I generally know where to go to find the information I need. Well, maybe not anymore.

Wow I read that. From what she wrote it seems like there were a lot of challenges for them before this.

She's got 3 kids on IEPs, one with a serious mental health condition caused by multiple moves with the government? I know pointing this out sounds insensitive, but lady, take care of your family.

+1. Let’s focus on solving some of our own problems before we solve the world’s.

USAID was working on ending an Ebola outbreak. You think Ebola (and other disease) doesn't cross country lines? Must be nice to be so ignorant and carefree.

Ebola is a negligible threat considering it is difficult to transmit and so deadly it burns out quickly.

The only money that should be spent on that is refusing entry to anyone from those hot spots. Which costs nothing.

Other diseases such as malaria are well known and those that live in malarial areas can learn to manage it themselves. Or do you think people in those areas are incompetent?

So your public health plan is:
- shut down international commerce
- DIY

Oooookay.

True enough, but having the rug pulled out from under you like this surely doesn't help.

This is not how a serious country treats its civil servants. Don’t like foreign aid? Take it up with your congresspeople who voted for it. Don’t let an unelected billionaire without a security clearance terrorize federal workers-particularly vulnerable ones overseas…

Why would you put your family through working overseas when they have severe health issues. Because of the hidden benefits, free private school, paid for house, renting your house at home that pays off the mortgage, luxury lifestyle of maids, driver's, free cars, duh

People lose their jobs all the time. Remember the Biden stopped the pipeline and 10,000 were suddenly out of work? They pivoted. So did all the people that have been RIF’d in tech the last few years.

This is what change looks like. No one is immune to change, it is how we adjust and adapt that makes a difference.

USAID pays school tuition?

Temporary Restraining Order issued blocking USAID shutdown:

"All USAID employees currently on administrative leave shall be reinstated until [Feb 14] ... no additional employees shall be placed on administrative leave before that date. No USAID employees shall be evacuated from their host countries"

Signed by Judge Carl Nichols. A Thomas clerk and Trump appointee! Jeez. This might all be much trickier than poor Elon expects.
