Will USAID really be permanently shut down?

+1. Let’s focus on solving some of our own problems before we solve the world’s.

They are the same thing. You think the world’s problems stop at our border? Is the US not part of the world?

They don’t understand what that is and their followers definitely don’t either.

They only care about making money and staying out of jail.

Once you understand that, their actions make sense. They don't care about what we care about.

USAID was working on ending an Ebola outbreak. You think Ebola (and other disease) doesn't cross country lines? Must be nice to be so ignorant and carefree.

USAID was attacked by Musk first because USAID’s IG was investigating Musk and Starlink..

So Musk had all the IGs fired.

Then he accessed the classified info—probably about Ukrainian positions.

Musk turned Starlink off for drones when Ukraine was trying to mount an attack against Russia. Just because.

Russia “mysteriously” got its hands on Starlink. Hmmm, I wonder how that happened!!

Yup. Musk was so keen to brand 10,000 employees of USAID as criminals because they were investigating one of his contracts for corruption …

Exactly. People taking the bait were born yesterday. Elon isn't a bully. He's a thug. He knew exactly what he was doing. Wait for Kennedy and remember how he makes his money off vaccine lawsuits. Good times.

If what they are doing is successful and if they cut deficit there will not be any government only red will be elected..

They will not cut the deficit. The current budget proposal being floated adds more to it, even with all the Medicaid cuts, etc. that have Republicans so giddy.

And that doesn’t even include Trump’s promised tax-free tips and overtime. He is pushing for them to be included. Those alone will add almost a trillion in 10-year costs, according to the materials Republicans have circulated.

There are conflicting reports about a few numbers that are being discussed.

How many USAID folks are direct hires vs. contractors?

How many direct hires vs. contractors are overseas?

Does anybody know ballparks on these numbers?

American humanitarian efforts are not what is causing need in the U.S. Billionaire profit and greed is. And now we have allowed the richest men in the world to take over the U.S. government, punishing and doing violence to the world's poorest.

How dumb are you? The proposed budget adds to the deficit. Oops.

The reputational damage is phenomenal. Thousands of country staffers who had contracts to provide security, translation, logistics and program delivery fired over night. Outstanding invoices for services rendered unpaid. To say nothing for the way Rubio and Trump were silent as they fired thousands of civil servants while Musk called them criminals.

Trump and Musk are following their corporate playgroup of stiffing the people working for them. Too bad he’s dragging down the reputation of the USA with him. They could have followed a normal process through Congress to reduce or defund USAId in an orderly fashion. Instead they made the entire world look at us as a banana republic and untrustworthy partner.

This is awful!

Unless the GOP cuts most defense spending any other cost saving measures will fail. Just look at the budget.

Nothing in the world is permanent, OP. It will probably be back in some shape or form, sooner rather than later.

I think part of the issue is that most of the country is not even aware that USAID existed, let alone what exactly it did. I grew up in another part of Virginia and had literally NO CLUE about the US Fed Gov machine until after I graduated college. Even after living here 20 years I still barely understand most of the agencies. And I vote D! Imagine how the out of state R's must feel.

The profound ignorance of these people is breathtaking. Also, if you want to focus on solving our own problems, why vote in people who plan to give tax cuts to the richest of the rich and gut social security and Medicare? That’s some real smart thinking right there.

PP thinks if we put our fingers in our ears and loudly say "LALALLAAAALALA!" that ebola, bird flu, islamic extremism, etc will all just go away. Shhh!

People are so naive about how the world works, it's absolutely insane.
