MCPS already does this. Where does your kid attend school? |
Agree, as a parent, I don't blame teachers for these decisions. It's squarely in the hands of central office. |
Yes, but teachers now have to go one additional day -- it's not like they get to end at the same day. Tuesday is now their work day. |
They already start the week before Labor Day. |
|
They should be using January 29 (next Wednesday) instead of June 16!
A. It's soon after the closures B. It's less than a month after the winter break C. School is already being held the rest of the week D. It's listed as the first makeup day If January 29 is used and March 31 and June 6 are reserved for the next 2 closures, school might not have to be held the week of June 16 unless there are 7+ closures. Closures 1 and 2 no makeup days Closure 3 makeup January 29 Closure 4 makeup March 31 Closure 5 makeup June 6 Closure 6 makeup June 16, however that is a Monday and some thing says the state would waive the makeup day of the last day would be on a Monday. |
There should be a law, however it should be more flexible. Some states have an hours requirement equivalent to 180 days but the schools have a little less than 180 calendar dates. That said MC should be doing everything to avoid going into the week of June 16 unless it becomes impossible. January 29, March 31, June 6 are listed as makeup days. They should be going in order so only if there are 6 or more closures would they have to end on June 16 or later. Someone said if the last day would be a Monday due to a makeup day it could be waived so there might have to be 7 or more closures to require school to end June 17 or later. However if January 29 passes without being used that becomes 6 and if they won't use March 31 or June 6 then just ONE more closure will be the last day at June 17 when they had the ability to AVOID it. |
| I saw on the MCPS FB post about this someone said they chose this day because if they end school on a Monday, they are able to request a waiver for any additional days, per state law. That seems very odd that that is the only way to request a waiver. Anyone know how to read the MD state policy on this? |
Eid al-Adha |
I like this idea |
This. Best not to send kids. MCPS would prefer kids not come. The state is forcing them to add this day. It is all optics |
Unlike you, I don’t sweat the small stuff. Quality over quantity |
And when should teachers finalize grades and generate report cards. It is several hours of work not including grading. |
The reason why the dates are labeled as non-instructional or professional days is not just to avoid offending people. It is also labeled so that way they can avoid paying the dei staff (Ie all the bus drivers, cafeteria workers and para educators). Certain dates are built into the calendar as no work no paydays for the SEIU staff. |
Just so you know, Trumper (and I say that because no one else would use the term "dei staff"), not all paraeducators are people of color. |
I think the ”DEI” in that post was supposed to be SEIU, like in the last sentence. Service Employees. |
