I'll pay 2x the current price of eggs to make sure my neighbor doesn't have a chicken coop.

No, that's not how it works. However, you could offer your neighbor $??? to not have backyard chickens. I wonder what the neighbor's price would be. Maybe it would be $4/week, and you'd be all set. Or maybe it would be more.

My man Ronald Coase in the coop!

Costco in Wheaton and the Safeway in Kensington had ZERO eggs as of 8pm last evening (Tuesday)

You mean right after the big snow freak out back to school shopping?

Recognizing that there is an egg shortage and the egg prices are high won’t make you Maga or Republican or conservative. It’s OK to accept the truth.

Except that I’ve never experienced a shortage of eggs minus maybe early pandemic. And the only eggs that are expensive are the free range ones.

You really need this omg the eggs thing to be true.

The only shortage is I saw last week were like the comfort foods like cheese and things like that right before the snow. Which I mostly thought was funny. It was clear there was a lot of baking and casseroles about to happen.

What you want to do is persuade your neighbor to have backyard chickens. Then they will have all of the trouble and expense, and you will have the benefits (watching chicken antics, and free eggs from your neighbor).

DH went to Costco in Gaithersburg in late afternoon yesterday. ZERO eggs, too. In addition, organic strawberries cost $16~ and non-organic strawberries cost close to $10 that was used to be price of organic strawberries not long ago.....

Do people on DCUM not know how to shop or price comparison...or is Bethesda just an embarrassment of affordable groceries all around?

I don't know how many pounds of strawberries you are getting for your $16...but you can get a pound of strawberries at Amazon Fresh for $2.99 ($3.99 organic). Raspberries are $6.29 for two containers (I think that's 16 ounces). Amazon offers $10 off $50 coupons ALL THE TIME.

Instacart sends $40 off $80 or $50 off $100 coupons ALL THE TIME. That's where you could order Harris Teeter eggs for $1.99/dozen (as many as you want...ordered 3). BTW...it's also a backdoor way to order from Costco without becoming a member. Some of the Instacart prices are higher, but most are the same.

You pay for Instacart delivery fees and what not, but it still usually works out to a 33% - 40% discount.

There is an actual egg shortage due to the avian flu which killed over 17 million egg-laying hens in the last two months of 2024.

The shortage will hopefully be addressed as farms are able to replace the hens but it takes time to raise a chicken, plus they have to continue to control spread of bird flu. May not truly be addressed until summer as more hens mature and can begin producing eggs.

The shortage can be worse in some areas than other based on local farm production, or higher demand due to something like a major storm. But the storm didn't cause the shortage, just exacerbated it.

But yes, there is an egg shortage right now and it's weird you are insisting there is not. Did you go buy eggs today? I did and there were not any on the shelves at my local supermarket, the fourth time that has happened to me in the last week.

I’m glad you have not experienced a shortage but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

I wish I could’ve taken you shopping with me yesterday when the only eggs were the organic free range ones that were out of my price range. And in previous weeks I’ve adjusted my budget because grocery prices, including eggs, are skyrocketing. I hope I’m wrong, I would be happy to be wrong and find fully stocked eggs at grocery stores next week.

Do some math, kitten. The snow was 10 days ago. This was last night.

There aren't, though. Not even in Fairfax County.

In Fairfax County you cannot have chickens on less than 2 acres, even as pets, unless you live in a locality that allows it (like Fairfax City) or are grandfathered, or go through the permit process with public hearing. I'm aware some people just have them anyway, but 2 acres is the rule in that county.

2 ACRES per bird?!?!

Uh, exactly how much poop do you think a 8 pound hen produces?

I mean they're attempting to halt the spread of a serious disease. You can have cheap eggs or you can increase the possibility of another pandemic.

It's not 2 acres per chicken. And the rule has two options: (1) 2+ acres (2) < 2 acres plus permit

Maybe the Haitians ate all the eggs.

Inside birds will, if you manipulate the temperature and light levels to spoof the bird’s hormones into thinking it’s spring time. But birds living in outdoor coops stop laying in the fall. Winter is about surviving, not hatching a bunch of chicks that will have nothing to eat for months. So hens quit laying.

Yardbirds won’t solve our egg shortage in the winter.

You must keep feeding them over the winter and provide heat, probably as an evil incandescent bulb to keep them warm. They will lay eggs.

Birds keep laying in the winter. They have food to eat because they are being fed.
