My son is an August birthday in a state where the enrollment cutoff is September 1st. He'll go from playing with his grade level to playing with the class behind him who he has no connection to.

So your child started school early? With the change they can always play with classmates if that is what they want. Nothing stops you from playing up, it just may not be on the top team. All these manufactured grievances are exhausting.

You’re reading this wrong. They didn’t start school late. They started when their state told them to start. If the soccer start date is August 1 but a state’s school start date is Sept 1 then all the August kids in that state would now ‘trapped players’. Not because they started school early but because the soccer start date and their state’s school start date don’t align.

Pp - I have heard that there will likely be a mechanism for kids in states that have an official school cut off date later than August 1 to play with their appropriate grade level (so your August kid would play with their grade level).

I dont understand people saying a switch to SY will eliminate the issue of athletic kids being left behind. There will still be a 12 month gap. The plight of the ber kids will shift to the plight of the summer kids. Except you then have to deal with various schools having different cut off dates and parents being allowed to red shirt as desired, so a 4th grader could be 9 or 11. That doesn't make sports teams more equitable in any way.

Birth year makes perfect logical sense and you cant argue your way in or out, its a basic number.

My kid is Aug birthday on grade with almost her teammate and the coaches and the club said my kid will continue with the team regardless if there’s a change or not.

So people need to stop freaking out. If your kid is good enough he/ she will continue with the current team.

Oh so people are using SY to actually mean just a different cut off date. I have an August boy who started school on time so is youngest in his grade. He plays on a travel team with kids mostly his grade, but some younger. An Aug 1 cut off would mean he is expected to play with kids almost exclusively in the grade below him. He would not like that, although he probably would be a stand out player. He is already one of the biggest and strongest players on his team.

Why wouldn't it be a Sept date to align better with schools?

Same here. Its so odd to me that this seems like the better solution. It just leaves a different set of kids trapped.

Agreed. My kid is a September birthday and has been playing with the top team the entire time. VA has an end of September cutoff for school year. Why didn’t they just make this you play with your grade rather than an arbitrary date. That way school and soccer are aligned and there are no trapped players. Oh, she will probably be allowed to play with her same team, but it would not be an issue if it was just set at - school year = team year. Are these people so clueless that they couldn’t figure out the easy solution? It accomplishes the same goal with no trapped players. SY should mean SY.
