SAT 1600 Score, CS Major

UMD with merit.

Denied at MIT, CMU, etc.. WL at UMich, ultimately decided not interested after getting off the wl.

It's brutal, especially if you are a white/asian male.

Majority of applicants for CS majors at selective colleges are white/asian males with similar stats.

What's your point?

NP. What's their point? That post provides direct data that is helpful to exactly what OP is asking about?? I think that was their point.

+1. So true.

This is what we're telling our asian son who is MCPS magnet with similar credentials, class of 2025. But, we also say that you can make a solid path for yourself at UMD or similar caliber university.

UMD is a solid college option and will become more competitive for admission - OOS or not.

This. No college will have unlimited opening for students from any HS. So a qualified student will always partly be competing against other students from the same HS for the N admissions slots that a particular college will allocate. Yes, TJ probably has an N greater than say Robinson, but TJ is filled to the brim with qualified students many of whom will have a bunch of quality ECs and other non-test/non-GPA differentiators.

Agreed with this. TJ kids all have really high SAT/ACT and high weighted GPA. To stand out in TJ, WGPA needs to be higher than 4.5 with SAT 1550+. GPA is far more important than SAT. My NMF kid has high SAT but 4.3<WGPA<4.4 was rejected by UVA and all top 20s, even with 2 publications in peer reviewed journals. Quite depressing.

Should’ve switched them to a less stressful public school environment and obviously they would be #1

Completely diverging- the sad sad truth is even in this round, if you are Asian and South Asian, the trick to getting into highly selective colleges for males is to strategize and provide evidence for humanities major. Non DC city. Two kids from top privates going to Harvard. Their proclaimed majors? History and the other Gender studies. I know first hand, there is no intention to study either in college. Will go for CS.

And to add: Both had close to 1600 SAT and very high grades.

Around here, the other trick might be to avoid TJ.

definitely.

Geez, imagine if this was your kid and they took every hard class and got perfect grades and top scores on SAT, AP, etc, You'd think they would at least have a chance, but nope. Until you have been through admissions for CS with your white/asian male kid you have no idea.

For the record, I am all for giving women and other URM a leg up.

They are competing against EACH OTHER. Almost exclusively.

Duh.

Competitive admissions.

Deal with it.

Yes, which is why I stated "it's brutal". Not sure what you mean by "deal with it". How are they not "dealing with it"?

Do you tell white girls who have a tough time with college admissions to "deal with it", too?

Please ignore the trolls. I don't care how pro- affirmative action you are... any parent should have empathy for a kid who worked their butt off and knows their results would be better if they were a different race. If you don't, you're a POS.

Attending UMD with merit aid.

In terms of quality, UMD CS is comparable to Cornell CS, which is the best of the Ivies. The college experience might be better at Cornell but the program is comparable.

Well, a 4.3-4.4 today is kind of like 3.3-3.4 prior to the grade inflation which sadly comes up short
