Freshman class is only 1,250 it is only 18 percent white or 225 White people in class. Of that 225 it is 60 percent male as a stem school so 90 girls. Of that 90 girls most will be stem type nerds or non Christian etc. now we are talking 10-30 datable girls.

Meanwhile my lesser rated Catholic college was like 52 percent women the majority white and Catholic. I like to date in college, have girlfriends, go to keg parties. Plus my school bigger 20,000 kids. I literally had like 5,000 pretty girls to date my grade alone.

Plus I could go off campus on a safe neighborhood to meet girls.

And don’t laugh kids do go to school to date and meet people. If I was black I go to Howard not John Hopkins.

The school is a prision for a fun outgoing kid

Wait—you think only white , Christian students make desirable dates????? Have I woken up in the Deep South, 80 years ago??!!

To be fair, interracial dating is a less common at top schools than you think given the demographics

Imo it’s another reason why southern flagships have skyrocketed in popularity

Prior to the accidental death of Freddie Gray (and the ensuing violent riots) Baltimore was on an upward trajectory of desirability and public safety, with appreciating home values in the city.

The riots - and subsequent failed prosecution of Baltimore city police - changed everything.

I owned a house in the city for years. I earned my degree there.

Baltimore was on the way up. BLM destroyed it all.

Hire a mid level administrator from Singapore and suspend civil rights, and Baltimore would become a jewel of a city

It has so much potential with such good bones

However, it has the reputation of being cutthroat, mostly for fundamental science, and the campus is located in a less-safe area of Baltimore.

I am interested in this option for my second daughter, who might go into STEM, but since I don't know Baltimore, I'm not sure about the safety situation.

Assuming you live in DC, maybe drive the 40 miles to Charm City and spend the day there and see if you like it?

Signed,
Long-time DC resident who works in Baltimore and manages to get coffee with students and colleagues and somehow has managed to never get mugged or worse

I lived in Charles Village near JMU for two years and never got mugged. I liked in Takoma Park for 1.5 years and got mugged.

I lived at 39 and Charles for 2 years - went everywhere in the city and had no issues

Yes, I also lived on 39th Street (between University and Charles) and was never mugged, robbed, or even had my car broken into. I’ve been all over the city for work (attorney for foster care system) and was never harmed. Been in Bmore for nearly 30 years now and based on some people’s comments here, I should have been robbed or dead at least 10 times over by now. Yes, Baltimore has problems, but just like any city, you should know where you are going and be smart. My kids started going to various parts of the city on their own as teens and they are just fine. One of them goes to high school not far from JHU and has lived to tell about it - imagine that!

Sadly, part of living in BMore is having to explain why you live in BMore.

I think it is a badge of honor though some perceive it as a tear drop tattoo.

Ha! Love it. And extra points for a Cry Baby reference.

20 years in Baltimore (Charles Village/Hampden) and one broken window is the extent of the crime I’ve experienced. And despite what PP says about how “BLM destroyed Baltimore” (lol) I’ve had some very nice property appreciation.

It's super popular but extremely hard to get in. You dont hear a lot about rejections on DCUM!
