We visited and honestly it looked to be a standard happy campus (kids were milling around, eating together) during the day. What crossed our mind was what happens in the evening. The outside of the campus felt uneasy at night. Also, if you venture off campus towards hampden etc, definitely not a walking comfort zone.

Hampden? That isn’t a high crime area and there are tons of people there at night because of all the restaurants/bars. I guess you avoid Dupoint Circle?

We had a AIRBNB in Hampden and walked to and fro from the Homewood campus. The rowhouses are not all the street with the restaurants. We felt uncomfortable walking in the evening. I would not allow my college kid to walk alone or even with another kid during the night.

OP and other interested parents - perhaps the best approach is to visit the campus yourself. Visit on a nice day when it is somewhat warm and stay until at least an hour after sunset. statisticaly that type of day has the highest crime level.

Go out into the surrounding neighborhood, walk around and see how the vibe fits with your child.

This! Please revisit the campus at night and decide how your kid and you feel about it. JHU guarantees housing for 2 years so you do have to venture off campus eventually.

No college kid should be walking alone at night in any city. Street smarts 101.

"Top 10" according to fake rankings? 99% of the country has never heard of it. For undergrad, it has zero lay prestige. Same for WashU.

Outside of DCUM, it is consistently ranked in the top 10 or top 15 for undergraduate colleges. DCUM likes to downplay it because DCUM hates Baltmore.

The university has huge name recognition because the hospital and medical school are typically in the top 3 in the nation and have been for decades. There are many people in the country who have heard of JHU undergraduate, but just assume it is a science and pre-med school. But there are many departments at JHU that are consistently at the top of ratings.

Your statements don't reflect much of what most lay ratings lists say.

Depends on the city. I would let my college kid walk back at 9pm in NYC or in DC or even in Houston. In Baltimore-no.

Bad reputation for not being a fun school. Viewed as cut-throat, extremely serious, and nerdy.

Agree. My kid walks alone in Boston at night. Obviously not after a certain time.

Haven't read all 13 pages of comments but I think most of you all haven't been near JHU recently. My kid just graduated from there and even despite COVID had the time of their lives and graduated with a great degree and job.

The campus is well lit and safe, a few blocks away are city safe and upper class students live all over there. If you have a kid considering a STEM focused college, I highly recommend checking out JHU. Also Bloomberg bucks can help with the cost.

Dc is now less safe than Baltimore according to the latest crime stats

Is everyone taking the DC schools off their list?

YES! I no longer live in DC due to crime and poor schools. None of my kids will apply to DC schools (or Balt for that matter) due to crime. Low crime areas is preferable.

lol. Yup, Georgetown and Foggy Bottom are crime-ridden hellholes to the Loudoun gated-community set.

You need to get out more!! Go visit some of the other cities at 9pm and walk around a one mile radius around some of the campuses and then give a lecture.

Never thought of it as T10. Maybe a little above average more like Georgetown.

It’s been ranked between 7-9 for a long time now
