Weather is part of my job, so though a fan doesn’t count.

Sorry geology and watersheds.

Ah, another one like me! It was my first career (before shifting to IT) but my nose is still in a ditch watching the flow of storm water.

Also a cooking fan, especially of ethnic cuisines and how they’ve found their way into modern American cultures.

And finally, tennis doubles strategy (not so much for playing pros but for recreational play from beginners all the way to club pros).

Another fan of this thread, OP. I would enjoy a long train ride next to many of these poster even if “their” subject isn’t my jive. To listen to someone passionate about their subject is generally enjoyable and entertaining for me. ☺️

Maybe this isn’t the thread for you?

Books, back-in-the-day DC, architecture, NYC in the ‘80s, and pretty much anything someone wants to talk about passionately — at least for the first five minutes. I did spend a few years hard core into guitars — and was startled by some of the truly awesome conversations I had with some Very Focused people in music shops and jazz clubs.

to the camper van poster, YES!

also,
*Japanese culture
*time and time travel
*reasons why women's shirts get holes near the bottom (not countertops, not belts!)
*cooking
*class in American culture
*the heyday of gangsta rap (esp boom bap)

nothing wrong with phrase "geek out." I love it. how else would DCUM posters describe this type of conversation? a very intellectual discussion? that sounds boring and stuffy.

That and 17th to 19th Central European history (former Holy Roman Empire nations, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth nations, Swedish deluge, tsarist Russia, French satellite states), migration then and now comparisons, evolution of gender roles post immigration, WWI, WWII, enlightenment era, war of 1812, etc.

Ice dancing. Would love to discuss in depth about ice dance technique, approach to choreography, scoring, how it can be improved, etc.

Most people are fine talking about the other 3 skating disciplines, but when it comes to ice dance, they’ll say judging is based on vibes and politics, and that’s the end of the discussion. Drives me crazy.

I read this question to my husband and his answer was cooking. We bake together but he has no one to share meal recipes with or talk about cooking techniques.

I've read lots of books and seen TV shows and movies but it's rare to find anyone who actually wants to talk about it.

Lol. I am a military wife. Wish I could get some people to shut up about World War Two, locations, obscure ww 2 movies etc. But seriously if you ever wanted to do volunteer work you could probably make some old guys in a nursing home happy by spending some time talking to them about ww 2
