This was off property. This was not a teacher or mcps issue. This is a parent issue. Maybe those parents need their kids removed from the home and put those kids a detention center.

At the same time, I do think we need to ask why these kids are so angry. There is an enormous range of wealth within these schools, particularly BCC, how does that affect some of these at risk youth? How can we, as a community, being to address this?

There is a huge range of wealth at these schools. Bcc draws from less wealthy areas too. Same with WJ but less. This is a parenting issue. Parents need to step up and supervise their kids when not on school property.

Because wealthier parents are better parents than less-wealthy parents?

And no, it's not inherently a problem for HIGH SCHOOL KIDS to be unaccompanied by parents while out and about.

Wealthy parents give their kids cars. No one is taking a metro to a football game.

The metro station has been a hang out at bcc since it opened especially since the McDonald’s and other places closed.

If you watch the commitment days, there are many athletes who are able to to college because they have earned college scholarships for the sport they've worked hard for. Those scholarships are dependent on playing their senior year.
Imagine taking away a kids way out and into college because some thug started a fight at a metro station.

You sound smart.

The joint statement from the principals of these schools is complete bull$hit. This was not a gathering that turned violent. This was a mob of BCC kids hunting down WJ kids while wearing ski masks. I can also confirm that there was indeed a weapon present. All have been treated for bruises and cuts. There was a separate incident where a WJ student was attacked and ended up in the hospital after being attacked with a weapon. He sustained head injuries and a broken nose. Please stop calling this a fight or brawl. These kids were attacked. I hope those who perpetrated this are prosecuted.

What triggered it?

The kid kicking is WHITE.

No

YES. He is white.

Maybe mcps needs to require parents to accompany the kids if they cannot behave. Wealthier parents often seem very checked out.

MCPS could require kids who attend football games to be accompanied by parents. In fact, I think MCPS did require that, in some cases, last year. However, MCPS can't just generally require kids to be accompanied by parents wherever they go.

BCC parent here: I totally agree with the PP. and if you watch the second video posted in this thread, it’s clear that the kids came prepared - several are wearing balaclavas or bandanas over their faces. In other words, this was premeditated violence. Of course one kid is wearing a BCC shirt, so not very bright either. I hope they’re prosecuted and thrown out of school.

Black with white hands

This. The kid is wearing all black but his hands are clearly white.

Are you referring to the hand with a long sleeved white shirt? To me, that looks like a middle aged man who approaches to try to stop the attack.

No, the kid wearing all black and a black hoodie/face covering beating up the kid who’s on the ground. When he stands up and puts his arm down you can see his hand is white.

Watch the other longer video. All the aggressors are black. It looks like a hate crime.

“what triggered it?

He was wearing a WJ shirt and was spotted by a crowd of BCC students, some of whom were wearing ski masks, looking for WJ students. Senseless.

Coaches can step in as well. Every kid who was involved should be removed from the team.

These kids were not an a team. Look at the video.

One of the seemingly attacking girls also appears white. I think it’s too soon and unclear (and unnecessary!) to presume all the races. We also don’t have all the footage. Suffice it to say, it’s awful and unacceptable.
