They were hardly working at the office anyway. |
Sound like APS doesn’t allow telework. Except for when they do. But if staff have the days off then they are definitely not teleworking. Maybe the answer os for APS to allow more teleworking for those who can (especially during school breaks) rather than the extra paid days off that teachers aren’t paid for? |
I'm an APS teacher working from home today. I don't have a problem if Syphax staff work from home either. I am not sure who does? Probably the same group of loud and entitled parents who accused us of not working during the pandemic. |
Dp. But syphax staff are not working from home today. They are paid for being off. The majority of APS employees are not paid for this week off. And it sounds like you’re working too. I don’t get any email returned from syphax during these breaks. |
No, you are wrong. Syphax staff worked today as did teachers. This week is not a break. Last week was a break. It doesn't sound like you have much of a clue. |
So they were paid to have all of last week off then. Got it. What do fairfax or our neighbors do? Are 12 month employees paid for breaks? I’m a fed and I have to take my annual leave. Which is fine because it’s fairly generous. |
Of course they were off, the school system was closed. You don’t work for a school system, Duh! |
No, YOU're wrong. Syphax staff had yesterday off just like the students. They were not working from home. Ask me how I know. No school day = syphax day off. Maybe some limited staff worked; but it was not a regular work day for them as a whole. |
The difference, and point, is that Syphax staff were off and PAID; while 10-month contract employees like teachers were off and not paid. The issue is the amount of paid time off the 12-month syphax people are getting. It's understandable that teachers aren't getting paid for summer break, since their contracts are only for 10 months. But that doesn't mean it's right for syphax staff to get all the school breaks off - paid - in addition to their regular annual/sick/personal leave. The compensation package, or benefits, or whatever you want to call it, is out of proportion v. teaching staff. |
I’m curious about APS maternity leave. I work for FCPS and there is a limited amount of short term disability but you only get it if the weeks line up just right with the contract calendar so you in order to be paid for 12 weeks you have to have 8 weeks of leave saved ( best case scenario) and 12 weeks saved ( worst case scenario). At an accrual rate of 12 days per year, it takes between 3.3-5 years OF NEVER TAKING A SINGLE DAY OFF to save up enough leave to be paid during maternity leave. How does it work in APS? |

??? This shows no school for students, grade prep day. I don't see anything about central office staff. |
APS cancelled it in 2018. Mentioned in the ArlNow story. |
I’ve worked as a 12-month employee for FCPS and ACPS; in neither case did 12-month folks get these breaks off. We could use leave (and we’re encouraged to) but if you did not take leave you were expected to be at work on those days. It’s VERY unusual for 12 month staff to get those breaks off automatically. |
