Is it really racist to wonder what color the baby's skin might be?

My sister and I said at the time of the Oprah interview that that question didn’t seem racist.

It's one thing to wonder if your kids will have blonde hair and blue eyes, but if it's in the context of making sure they have Aryan features, well then that's a whole other problem. The implication in the case of the royal family is that a dark skinned child would have been seen as an imperfection in their bloodline.

Where are you getting this from?

My family is as white as it can be, all coming from 100% white European country (my 82 years old grandmother never seen African person in her life). But my dad's side has olive skin, dark hair and my mom's side has blond hair and blue or green eyes. This conversation is totally normal in our family because some of us turned out having pink pale skin, and some beautiful olive skin. I guess two white people can be racist when they enquire about white baby skin tone?

At the baby shower, Benjamin Moore paint chips were passed out so folks could guess the baby's skin color. Everyone was happy to welcome the baby, and love him/her whatever complexion.

It seemed pretty harmless at the time, maybe 15 years ago.

That’s crazy AF!

You meant Racist AF!

Plenty of you with this opinion and I've yet to see one person articulate why.

Because a passing thought/question is different than the time/planning/ignorance spent buying chips, creating the game and potentially offending people at a shower. Everyone has their own experience with race, including their own, so this is a very loaded 'game'. Same as with those 'how fat is the pregnant lady?' games where you guess her abdominal girth. Great if no one has an issue with body image- problematic/unfun if someone does.

-and I'm not even that sensitive a person when it comes to potentially offending- but these are no-brainers.

Y’all know it is comedy right, not a treatise on racism in post colonial Britain.

yeah, that's what I thought as well.

Meghan is playing the black card because it's cool these days and helps her sell interviews for millions. If tomorrow black is not cool but purple is she will become the most purple lady of all times.

Saying "it's just comedy" is such a cop out. When your comedy involves taking positions on social issues, you have to expect people to engage with them seriously

I'm not sure what was funny about what he said re it being just an inlaw thing vs racist, but I kind of thought DCUM would be fine either way given how spirited the conversations are on the pervasiveness of annoying inlaws and also everything is racist especially if white people think it or say it.

How? It's not derogatory or prejudicial or hurtful. Why is is Racist? You need a dictionary.

Great example. This contribution, in the context of this thread, is racist!

Dictionaries are racist.

I trust the ancient wisdom of indigenous natives who were the ancestors of Meghan the Pure, and they tell me anyone who attacks Meghan the Pure is racist.

If you have to ask if it is racist, then in all likelihood its racist.

The question should really be whether it is abnormal to be racist about a baby’s skin color or features? No, unfortunately it is not. Meghan has her father’s nose that is said to be one of the most requested shapes in plastic surgeons’ offices. She straightens her hair. Nearly the whole world has internalized Western/White beauty standards. Do you think she was secretly hoping her child would have 4C hair and her mother’s broader nose? Nope, it I was just painful to experience such entitled, casual racism. Until fairly recently, more black models just looked like white women with full lips and a tan. It will take many, many years of media representation to counter colorism and I am not optimistic about the change.

Megan has had rhinoplasty, like most celebs
