Is it really racist to wonder what color the baby's skin might be?

Are M&H trying to claim they didn’t wonder what their kids might look like before they were born? Yeah right. Everyone does this.

They are the parents. Everyone else, stand down.

There is a difference in wondering what your baby might look like and wondering how dark their skin might be. I'm not sure why you guys are missing that significant point.

Well if he did, hopefully, he was smart enough to keep his wonderment to himself.

What Harry probably wonders the most is why Meghan looks so white in her private areas.

I mean, it's probably considered okay to wonder if the baby will get dad's curly hair or mom's blue eyes or grandmas lovely complexion or grandpas athletic build, etc etc, so why is it racist for anyone anticipating the arrival of a baby in the family to wonder what the skin might look like? In a mixed couple there are many possibilities and no way to know until the baby emerges.

I don't recall either M or H saying whoever speculated about that was implying that darker would be a problem, seems like they just assumed that was the intent. Maybe that's racist.

Chris Rock is very racist! And just terrible too.

At the baby shower, Benjamin Moore paint chips were passed out so folks could guess the baby's skin color. Everyone was happy to welcome the baby, and love him/her whatever complexion.

It seemed pretty harmless at the time, maybe 15 years ago.

Holly cow This is really offensive. Especially given that some Indians are very concerned with lightness/darkness.

My children are mixed and I never wondered how dark or light my children were going to look. My SIL sure did though 🙄

I think if a family was welcoming their first mixed race baby into the bloodline it would be natural to wonder about what combination of pigmentation the baby will emerge with. It would probably not be a great idea to speculate about it in front of the parent of color because they might take it as being racist whether it actually was or not. It seems like it's human nature to wonder but once it slips out of your mouth it's open to the interpretation of others.

This thread is a dumpster fire of people wondering why racism is racist and sharing some awful comments

Yes, this totally sounds like the type of Indian who values light skin. 🙄

Ugh, all these people on here claiming something’s not racist because their POC family/friends do it too. Ever heard of colonialism? Imperialism? Did you go to high school? Remember how Europeans subjugated people all over the world and used skin color as a marker of civilized-ness? Kipling’s “White Man’s Burden”? The fact that English is a universal language? The racism has been around so long and has been so pervasive that they have shaped norms, subtly and not-so-subtly, that are now engrained in most societies, thereby internalized by those who were/are subjugated. Do your homework, think critically and don’t take everything at face value.
