Why? How did it get this way?

-covid fall-out---reactive depression: "we're back to normal so why do I feel so lost?"
-social media, social media, social media

Most of these kids are on track to graduate with a solid ten to twenty years of debt on their shoulders, into a society that doesn’t value them, doesn’t want them to have kids, tamps down their income growth to quash inflation, at the end of a youth spent being inculcated with the idea that the world as they know it is doomed and the solemn promise that they will own nothing and be happy.

I’d be pretty damn despondent, myself.

Sadly, this is not unique to this University. The mental health crisis is causing turmoil nationwide and the strain on mental health professionals is seen at all levels.

When I was at the University of Florida every week during my first semester someone jumped.

You are correct this is not unique to NCSTATE.

One of mine did eng/cs at NC State I personally would not recommend it for many reasons even for in-state students.

From that overcrowding to unbelievably horrible professors. My kid is an A student no matter where they went, meaning my criticisms are because my others attended other schools and their experience in terms of academics was so much better. NC state changes requirements for graduation in the middle of semesters. It has a health center that is basically non-functional.

I could go on and on.

Centennial campus is lovely however that is only when looking in from the outside.

One program at NC State that is fantastic is its Textiles program. That I would recommend for in-state students.

No reason for anyone to go to NC State out of state.

Mine went because we had lived in Raleigh. And they were very active kid NC State has great intramurals. Eight at State is a great way to stay active at school.

+1. Social media. The saddest, loneliest, most connected generation. Kids don't talk. They all have their heads downs in their phones. So damn sad.

That’s been around for 17 years. Try again.

Kids need more experience falling down and getting up again to learn that nothing is a fatal crisis. Some children live with so much fear borne of never having experienced getting back up from a fall. They don't realize they can do it.

The helicoptering is hurting all of our kids.

Why are you trolling for NC suicides and reactivating threads? Suicides at the late teen/early adulthood stage are unfortunately common. There were several ar my slac and at my Children’s public (two drug/induced)

I know teenagers that have tried to kill themselves who are not on social media.

I think social media is a big culprit but not the only factor.

In addition to Covid, academic pressure and the related economic insecurity, there is also climate change and the state of the world in general which I think is really on the minds of some/many teenagers.

I think this is a big part of it. Some of their most formative years were impacted by a global pandemic, democracy on the brink with a rise in authoritarianism, and an existential climate crisis that is not addressed. Then add in mass shootings (my child’s school was the scene of a school shooting one year ago and her peer group remains traumatized). Plus, our country is more diverse than ever but many are impacted by rising antisemitism, xenophobia, and anti-LGBTQ sentiment. It’s a tough world and hard to feel much hope if you’re a teen or young adult.

+1. According to wiki 21,000 college age students try it every year and 1100 are successful

This is #1 what makes my kid unhappy. The high school brags only about students who get into top 25 schools. None of the others matter, I guess. My kid sees this on social and feels bad. They are an excellent student but they didn’t build a rocket or whatever you have to do these days for the elite schools.

They have parents who call them "they" to somehow protect them, among other things.

SOCIAL MEDIA

We all know people who go look at their friends FB pages then come back here talking about how inadequate they feel in their lives. It causes constant scrutiny and criticism. They interact with others with less depth and feeling.

It’s so much easier to blame SOCIAL MEDIA than the true cause — parenting.

Oh, grow the hell up, fool.

Everyone blames social media or involved parents but the reality is these kids never should have been sent away to college and have serious untreated mental health issues.
