Why do MoCoites keep voting for the same? Silver Spring residents are melting down due crime

At my company, some of our brand new hires that are warehouse assistants make 17-19 bucks an hour.

That's 37.5 a year or so. And yet all of them somehow find a place to live as they are starting out. Maybe they have roomates, maybe they live with family,. The point is they do. They may not live 100 yards from our office.

Some of the language in this thread suggests people have no agency or self sufficiency at all, and the government should just do everything. It's so insulting.

Maybe they live in their car, maybe they're couch-surfing, maybe they spend 4 hours a day on the bus, maybe they have 6 adults and 4 children in a 2-bedroom unit, maybe they share a room in a house that's been illegally converted to a rental, maybe they spend two hours' wages per shift on Uber...

You can either work hard and make smart choices or whine and complain in your parents basement under the mistaken belief that the world owes you something.

Thanks for confirming that you are too good to get roommates and rent an apartment in a building at a price you can afford. They exist and you can do it. You just choose not to.

Who is the "you" you are condescending to?

Do you think it's acceptable that, if you don't have a lot of money, the housing 'at a price you can afford' is 5 adults and 3 children (including a baby) in an apartment with at most 3 bedrooms, with rats, cockroaches, mold, mildew, and flooding? I don't.

5 adults, even making minimum wage would be able to afford just about anything actually. Or are some/most of these adults not working also?

Maybe they can hire you to make decisions about their lives. You don't know anything about their lives or circumstances, but why let that stop you?

It seems you are the one who wants to tell them where to live. And what transportation they should or shouldnt use.

I'm perfectly fine with letting them figure it out for themselves. You know, like other adults.

How very tolerant of you to be perfectly fine with other people having unacceptable housing, as long as you can continue to use the services they provide.

Who is to say it is unacceptable? You?!

If there are code violations and what not- then by all means crack down on the offending parties. All for that.

But dont tell some person or family how/where to live.

Who is to say housing with rats, mold, and deadly floods is unacceptable?

1. county code
2. the people who are living there
3. the elected officials they asked for help
4. anybody with any decency

The only crime in Silver Spring is some young white guys thinking they pay too much for housing.

1) The county does have a housing shortage- both affordable and just in total housing period. We should do something about that.

2) People cant just live wherever they want, regardless of income, age, etc. Thats just life. "I make 40k a year, but I want to live in a brick rowhouse in georgetown". Well sorry, you (or anyone) is not just entitled to that because you'd like it. If you dont earn much, you may have to live farther out, or have a longer commute, or sacrifice on a few of your wants. God knows I did.

I don't think anybody is saying, "I should be able to live in whatever I want wherever I want."

But there's no reason why whole geographic areas should be off limits for people who aren't affluent. That's why it needs to be legal to have a mix of housing type. Maybe you can't afford to live in a free-standing house with a yard, but you can afford to live in an duplex, or in an apartment in a sixplex, or whatever.

There was someone earlier in this thread who was pretty much saying that.

Cite, please. I don't see anyone saying that.

This was the post I was thinking of

"Really? In downtown Silver Spring?

Or elsewhere, where you have to add to your housing costs either the monetary cost of owning and operating a car, or the time cost of getting around the county by bus or bike (plus the opportunity cost of being unable to get to certain parts of the county reasonably, or indeed at all)?

OK so yes- if you live farther out from a city center, you then have to commute to work/things. That's literally life. How many things should we have to subsidize?

It's called making choices. Live in a 600 sq foot shoebox and walk everywhere, or live farther out and drive. What is so hard about these trade offs?

Being unable to afford either option, yet needing a place to live.

There are lots of places that are cheaper to live than the close-in suburbs of Washington. Move, that’s how it works.

Where do you think the low-wage workers whose services you rely on should live?

Further out or with roommates! They could buy a house and rent out a basement apartment too. Don’t have kids you can’t afford.
