Why do MoCoites keep voting for the same? Silver Spring residents are melting down due crime

Anonymous
Social media in the Silver Spring area is blowing up over the out of control crime.in the area, especially DTSS. Long time residents who've lived in the area for 50+ years say it is the worst it has ever been. Apparently MoCo disbanded the police unit responsible for dealing with stolen vehicles even though they're often used to commit more crime (in what world does this make sense?). There's an amusing post of a car salesman in MoCo telling the story of how a criminal stole a car out of their lot, crashed it, and tripped over his low hanging pants. He only spent 1 night in jail because the police apparently 'could not prove he stole the car'. There was also a recent day time shootout at Veterans Plaza, the senseless killing of the senior citizen for no reason in the parking garage, and constant carjackings at gunpoint. It feels like people are getting pissed:

Yet look at the composition of the council. What did voters think would happen? The only thing as shocking as the huge spike in crime in MoCo, especially in Silver Spring, is the fact that MoCoites keep getting garbage results, keep voting the same, and keep expecting improvements. How is the entire county of people this dense? Truly mind boggling people in MoCo vote for stupid, get stupid, yet expected something else. The story of the killer who murdered a guy in Silver Spring and the police later found the decomposing corpse of a pregnant woman in his apartment is shocking.

Republicans in MoCo need to start registering as Democrats for local elections or we will just keep getting more of the same.

The problem for Silver Spring is that effectively dealing with crime means that the people who live there will need to confront their sacred liberal shibboleths and as with anyone in denial, they’re going to need to hit rock bottom before any change is possible.

You just see the most prominent Silver Spring people on social media and they are so obnoxious that there is no way that anything can change until things get a lot worse, unfortunately.

The politicians are just following the will of the voters. For the past two years, stupid MoCo voters said that the police are the enemy, that we need fewer of them, and that we shouldn't report crimes because police will just harass people committing the crimes. Elected officials listened to the people and gave the people what they wanted.

People are just incredibly stupid if they really believed that decimating the police force and labeling them as the enemy wouldn't lead to more crime.

We’ve found the obnoxious too online Silver Spring head in sand progressive. Do you think this crime is NBD? You may want to talk your fellow liberal Silver Spring and Takoma Park friends. I think you will find out that their progressive values end the moment these things begin to affect them personally. It’s one thing if it’s 20-something males shooting each other at 2 AM on Georgia Ave. It’s quite another when its middle aged women having a guns shoved in their face at 7 PM trying to shop at Safeway.

You may not be aware, but the neighborhood is starting to get a reputation for crime and you may not be able to understand this, but it is not a good thing.

Council member Mink begrudgingly showed big increases in violent crime in White Oak for 2020 and 2021 during the meeting discussed in the article.

It's clear the county govt gives zero craps about shoplifting and property crime, because insurance will cover it so NBD right? The only problem is that this kind of attitude towards crime emboldens criminals. When they can steal cars at gunpoint with impunity they keep pushing the envelope further to see what they can get away with. Silver Spring has gone down the tubes because there is just no more law and order.

This may or may not be correct, that shoplifting is a slipper slope to violent crime. But what is unambiguously true is that if Mink and the County really cared about economic development in White Oak then they need to get a handle on crime first. No major company is going to invest in White Oak if it has a high crime rate, regardless of whether it is property crime or violent crime.

Mink isn’t going to last more than one term. She got elected in a district with a high Black population because the Black vote was split across many candidates. She won’t be so lucky four years from now, unless she actually does something impactful in the community instead of posting about national affairs on social media.

Given that your statement about the auto theft unit at MCPD is completely wrong I’m going to assume everything else you said in your post is false/made up/exaggerated too. You should fact check before you make statements.

Which neighborhood is "Silver Spring"? Woodside Park? Leisure World? White Oak? Aspen Hill? Please explain.

The auto theft unit was disbanded in 2021 due to budget cuts. The statement isn't wrong :

Are you actually this thick or pretending to be this thick?

The Online Left in Silver Spring, median age of 24, believe that Marc Elrich isn't woke enough because he loves cops too much. They want him to defund the police more.

I think this is referring to the 7pm armed Thayer/Fenton Safeway carjacking last week, so the neighborhood would be DTSS and the areas bordering it, particularly around Fenton toward TKPK and (to a lesser degree) the side streets toward Dale.

Honestly I am not quick to call "crime!" and make rash assumptions based on 1 incident. But there have been a bunch of incidents, increasingly earlier, and with a young teen who likes to spend time in DTSS and takes these routes often walking with friends at a variety of hours my spouse and I have decided there is NO walking at night and now we are not sure that's good enough. I think I will lay off that Safeway for a while too, though I do love it. Was it in the garage or the upper surface lot? That must have been terrible for the people who work there: a lot of those workers are lovely and have been there a long time.

From reports on Nextdoor from people who saw the victim after the incident, it was the upper surface lot.
