Because the money has already been legally appropriated and it is unconstitutional for the US to not pay its debts.

The debt ceiling isn't about paying debts, it is about borrowing more money, creating more debts.

Congress already passed laws appropriating the money, the debt is to pay for what congress has already spent

And mostly spent by W and Trump.

Face it, if the GOP were truly interested in this, they would not have exploded the debt by the 2017 tax cuts, and they would have reigned in spending when they controlled the House, Senate and White House between 2017 and 2019. They didn't do that, but rather quite the opposite.

It's the republican playbook. Cut taxes blowing a hole in the budget, but stay silent about the debt. Wait until the democrats are in power and then howl about the debt, but propose only spending cuts not tax increases. They've been doing this since for decades now.

Yep...and they're exploiting the Dems' glaring weakness, which is that Democrats want our government to function.

Republicans are the cause of our debt problems.

What a goofy chart, comparing last year of previous presidents only. Compare Obama to Bush debt.

What is goofy about it? Accurate that when the GOP is in the White House, the debt goes up and when the dems are in the white house, the debt goes down.

It is such a sordid myth that the GOP is the party of fiscal responsibility and restraint.

There are bars for each year, dear.

You and everyone else knows that the congress proposes budgets and works with the president on enacting them, so don't act like democrats are as pure as the driven snow. Covid threw a monkey wrench in everything. We got close to 6 trillion in spending up from a normal of 3.5 the minute covid hit. That's over and it's going to bogart the numbers. There's nothing that's been cut by the WH. In fact, true to form, Joe says we have to spend more to keep from going broke. I've never seen him serious about spending cuts.

You wanna jack up taxes? Look for serious outflows from the U.S. in this global economy.

Now do that chart up there year by year for congress. Maddow or Benet or whoever put it together are clowns.

Oh, and Trump was a helluva spender too. BTW, whoever said defense and the VA are 60 percent of the budget are flat out wrong.

This misinformation is easy enough to correct. Inform yourself.

Sorry, hon - COVID doesn't explain while deficits increased under every Republican prior to COVID. And, you're the one who's a clown.

Whenever this obstruction happens, Congress’ pay should immediately be frozen and so should their benefits. They are not doing the job for which they’ve been elected.

It didn't have to be that way, but the Trump Administration bungled COVID so badly that it became necessary. What was the excuse for W?

How do you explain the pre-COVID rise in Trump debt?

Republican tax cuts blew up the deficits every time. Reagan. Bush. Bush. Trump. Big tax cuts followed by bigger deficits. Every time.

First, they cut taxes and create big budget deficits. Then, they mismanage and deregulate and enable fraud until they crash the economy. Those are sure things you can count on from a Republican Administration.
