I think the STEM and magnet programming in MCPS are good, but your other statement is BS.

Are you saying that MCPS is the best public school system in the nation? LOL! Not a chance.

And STEM? Science education is almost non-existent in our ESs. Middle school science classes are not much better.

And feel free to look at the Math proficiency results to understand just how poorly MCPS students are doing in Math. It is quite abysmal.

Smaller class sizes and better discipline sounds like common requests that I think, everyone could get behind. Why can’t MCPS start there?

Except that costs money and a tax hike needed to pay for this will mostly go to create more central office jobs.

The bottom line is MCPS is about the same or even better than years past, the demographics of the county are what has changed. That has an impact on standardized test scores but doesn't mean you can't get a great education. People just need to accept and adapt instead of focusing on a past that never really existed.

True. The demographics of Montgomery County have greatly changed over the past decade and that has had an influence on MCPS.

But that will continue to be the case. And the school system faces many challenges as a direct result of these changing demographics. Doesn’t look promising for MCPS.

School choice coming to VA, hopefully MCPS families are not that stupid.

Vouchers for religious schools are a scam to redirect public tax money into churches that pay no taxes.

They are double-dipping on their tax exempt status.

MCPS is a large school system it has tons of needs nothing is perfect. Parents need to be involved. If you don't feel your kid is getting a good education in MCPS then go back to school. Because every kid I know that has graduated has been successful in college in the sense the reason students fall out have nothing to do with what they did not learn at MCPS.

This thread is full of idiots.

Don’t worry. School choice will never come to Montgomery County. Voters and our trusty Democrat politicians will be sure of that.

You only get the privilege of ‘school choice’ if you are wealthy and can afford private school.

MCPS did the charter school experiment back in 2012ish and it failed spectaculary. I'm convinced MCPS knew it would be a major cluster, and that's why they approved it.

The only place these are successful is places where the situation is completely dire. Usually, it's just a way to siphon taxes into the hands of special interests and harms education.

Yes, for the county's demographics, it's amazing. Best by far!

That school only had 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds.

Morale abysmal (students, parents, teachers, paras, etc.), administration is severely bloated, special ed is a disaster that will cost the system for years to come (for all the education the special ed kids are entitled to and are not receiving), and there is no longer any discipline anywhere, or consequences for anything for students (for behaviors, for abuses, for not doing work).

So many reasons, but I'll put the blame squarely at the top: the GOP would like to dismantle public education and use tax dollars for private catholic education. They have been playing the long game, and have been helped along by the oandemic

Honey the schools in Moco get over 3 BILLION a year and have been run by DEMS the entire time. Nah this disaster is squarely on the libs…

This. And as a Republican myself, Montgomery County leaves me to question my belief that all education should be handled at the state level. I shudder to think what the state of Maryland would do to further the decline were they given the opportunity. And this is not on liberals, liberals are not the progressive Democrats who rule the Democrat Party and Montgomery County. Democrats just borrowed that name when being a Democrat became a dirty word. Democrats are not liberals, not in any sense.

Everyone who holds elective office in Montgomery County is there because they won the majority of the votes. Also, they are all affiliated with the Democratic Party. Also, they are all Democrats. Also, some of them are liberals, some of them are progressives, and some of them would have been Republicans 20-30 years ago, before the Republican Party headed off in the direction it's now headed off into.

That's an important distinction. Republicans of the past, like 30-40 years ago, would be progressives today. Also, these changes are simply a reflection of the county's changing demographics. Overall, MCPS has done a wonderful job with the changes. Hispanic immigration accounts for about 5% to roughly 35% over the past 2-3 decades; things are just different, affecting the average standardized test scores. Nevertheless, anyone who is interested in getting an excellent education can. My kids are doing far better than I did 30 years ago at a W cluster. I don't really see a problem here. 6

DP but MCPS is the best large public school system. Anyone above them has less than 20,000 students overall.

DP
No private school in the area can even come close to MCPS when it comes to STEM. That's a fact.
MCPS is still the best large school system in the nation.

From my perspective, the issue is that we expect the schools to do all this, and do it on the schools dime. Along with feeding kids, providing mental health support, developmental therapies for kids who need them, making sure they are clothed, etc. Schools are the catch all social service for most poor kids and then people get mad when schools are spending so much money without better educational outcomes. If we had a more robust social service network in this country (including ESL support for kids outside the school system), schools could focus more on teaching.

I hear you about social services but ESL? That's a specific responsibility of the school system for which it receives significant amounts of funding. The question of whether it's enough funding is different, but to say it shouldn't be the system's responsibility at all is just xenophobia.

It wouldn't be a new year in DCUM land if private shools parents and NoVa folks didn't start with their annual MCPS bash-fest.

The charter was an elementary school. The preschool was something different. That organization has always been terrible and shady. They had their own preschool and housing program. The housing program was shut down.

Maybe the charter could have aged into an elementary school if it had continued, but the kids there were ages 3, 4, and 5.
