Sitting in a classroom for 18 years and then spending the rest of your life in a cubicle on a computer is the definition of a soulless existence for most guys. Our society is creating a bunch of nerds. Things like sports, leadership, courage, integrity, and tenacity are just not emphasized like they used to. See something, say something. Uh, maybe you should DO something. Join the DE&I cult or else! You are a misogynist if you attempt to sleep with numerous attractive women! And don't go to school when it snows or play dodgeball because who knows what could happen

This guy is an obnoxious tool, but this is why you see a market for these clowns. I think it is likely a phase, and once his "business" fails, his opinion of this guy will hopefully change.

Op here. I totally get what you are saying about why this is a happening and I agree.

Even if it is a phase and has nowhere to really go in the long or even medium-run, it still must be addressed.

I have also come to the conclusion that it is going to be extremely hard to get him to see this for what it really is or make changes (aside from falling flat on his face which wouldn't be the worst thing) because it is not just him - it is his 2 best high school friends. Peer influence is everything at this age. I have no idea what or if their parents know what is going on. I am considering addressing all 3 of them in some way because they need to hear pushback from someone. Not in a confrontational way, but in a hey, guys, you are better than this sort of way. I certainly do not think I am going to just change their minds, but I hope to give them food for thought together. Then we can address ds issues specifically separately. You are all going to laugh but they are 'good kids'. They were leaders in hs, smart, athletic, good potential, etc. but they got involved in the gymbro culture during Covid and this is where it has led. Honestly I think a big part of it is that they all went to college and realized they were not the BMOC anymore and they are trying to find that feeling again in the wrong way/place.

And this is the problem. No one raises white men to be accepting of the fact that they might not be #1 all the time. White men have an expectation of being on top wherever they go. And when they’re not? The lash out and get violent.

You might think “nerdy guys” are soft or unmanly but I can tell you that those nerdy men who’ve been raised with respect for others and differing lifestyles are not a threat to society

This isn’t just a white boy problem

No, toxic masculinity affects all races. But white males account for 70% of all suicides in this country with highest rates of depression. The overwhelming majority of hate group members are white males. This isn’t coincidence

I was talking more about the phenomenon of threatened males resorting to violence. The fixation on the US here is pretty ethnocentric. It’s a global phenomenon — white men in the USA are generally a LOT more enlightened when it comes to women than men in many other cultures.

Obviously. We are significantly more socially progressive than KSA, China, India, etc. no one is arguing that. But where the US stands relative to other countries doesn’t change the fact that white men - in this country - have huge mental health issues that are not being met. I argue that it is bc they have told from childhood that they MUST be alpha male and anything less is failure. Oh, and they cannot cry, show weakness or any emotion. The male emotional intelligence is nil. This is where Andrew Tate comes in

That’s true for a subset. But it’s sort of a trope that white men’s mental health needs are underserved. This is still all very much fringe, freak stuff, well outside the norm.

?
Something is wrong if white men 25-34 are the primary source of suicide, hate groups, incels, etc. the more we brush it off, the bigger it gets. The stigma in mental health is real. We are raising the boys wrong

Again, this is fringe activity. It’s a bunch of freaks. Losers. Yes, it’s an annoyance but it’s not like a widespread problem. And honestly it’s not really anything new, it’s just that social media makes it easier for them to connect.

I’m sorry but I think you’ve lost the plot. Tate had 12B views on TikTok before takedown. That’s not fringe. Rogan is the largest space on Spotify. Musk needs no explanation. These guys aren’t fringe, nor is their message. Do you know an US HS male? Ask him who he follows. And his friends

This^^^

It’s is not fringe.

Women being raped and killed is not fringe when it 1/4 minimum

I think this Tate guy came on the scene about a year ago and he has about 4 mil followers on Twitter. That's about 1% of the US population. This guy is just another idiot on social media who is great at marketing. His content is really weird and obnoxious. Some of his Tik Tok videos show video games and interviews at the same time. Not sure what you are referring to when you mentioned women being raped and killed?

He had 4.4 million followers on instagram and it was growing at a fast pace. Teachers have started to see his influence on the boys in their classrooms. He believes women bear some responsibility for their rape and he has posted videos of him being violent towards women. He says that women are not the same as men, that men are supposed to have control over women and women need to submit to their authority.

This is not a movement to be brushed off. It's bad.

He's a big celebrity in a romanian prison. He's going to be a very popular boy for the next month

It's doubtful the Romanian human trafficking charges are legit. Even in the US, a woman giving a hand job at a massage parlor is supposedly a victim of human trafficking.

"Supposedly"? You're a total creep and many of those women are trafficked.

So you think a woman who speaks little English who is performing sex acts to paying customers , under the radar, is…. Not a victim of sex trafficking?!!

Yeah, it's called prostitution.

Remember all of those sex trafficking victims at the spa visited by the Patriots owner?

OP here with a little update and I am hoping I am not speaking too soon.

This seems to be fizzling out. The last few days he has been talking about his change in majors and today it was confirmed - so he was really excited. Hopefully this new major will be more inspiring for him and he won't be distracted by this insane 'business' scheme. I know that the news last week about Tate has also caused him to simmer down but I haven't pushed it because that will throw him into defensive mode.

I am feeling a little better just because he is clearly ready to go back to school.

Don’t worry, people go through stuff when they’re young. Nobody’s right about everything all the time, and the things we are wrong about have varying levels of harm. Dropping out of school to pursue a scam business is not a death sentence. At least there’s ambition in there! He’ll figure out the misogyny too. People believe all kinds of dumb things in college. Love him, don’t bankroll anything stupid, debate with him when he’s doing it in good faith and it’ll all come round eventually.

Great news. It’s not unusual for college kids to go through dumb phases.

You’re absolutely snarking me. So far you’re not doing better.

It’s a valid question IMO. My kid would never in a million years support this sexist charlatan. He recognizes that the way he talks about and treats women is vile. What values did you instill if he listens to anything that misogynist says and thinks it is true?

OP here. I wasn't engaging in the posts above but I will respond to this.

I have 2 other ds who think he is awful. I have one who is very into him - mostly the get-rich bullshit he espouses but the anti-woman rhetoric is also being absorbed. I have always instilled into all 3 of them the values that are antithetical to all Tate stands for. I don't know what else to tell you. I am pretty heartbroken right now but I can't dwell on that because I am working hard to take the step to get him to extricate himself from this and it be his idea, bc that is the only way it is going to happen.

His dad and his dad's family are conservative so he has grown up exposed to that kind of thinking as well, but none of them would ever condone any kind of Tate way of thinking. My ds is also down this rabbit hole with 2 close friends so there is a huge peer pressure element too.

OP, get tougher. I’m sorry but young white makes get away with SO damn much BS. They are treated with kid gloves. Parents don’t want to offend them or push them away. It is this very treatment that makes them so likely to follow Tate, Rogan, etc. you’re actively raising a far right wing extremists who espouses misogynistic views and dangerous anti-science/vaxx views.

From where I stand, your son is a danger to society and my DDs. Don’t be scared of parenting. Sit down and talk to him point blank. Show him evidence. Have him talk with experts. Get him counseling. Cut off funds, if need be. Make him get a job so he’s not wasting time w this BS.

Oh my goodness. What hyperbole. Her son is no more a danger to society than millions of other while and black males who listen to people denigrate women. Good grief, get off your high horse lady.

Anonymous wrote:I am posting here about this because I am at my wit's end with my 18yo college freshman ds.

Over the break he has been questioning the point of college. He has started an 'online business' that I have through my research/snooping learned that it is some sort of scammy ecommerce website and he has joined an online community/learning group started by Andrew Tate call the Real World, which 'educates' people on how to do this. He doesn't know I know about the group he joined but no knowing what it is about is making the things ds has been saying/doing make sense.

Ds has also been echoing some of the other things Tate says about depression (that it is not real) and about the role of women in a relationship.

He has always been a gym person so I think this is where the AT attraction started with him this summer and it has spiraled in college as he is trying to figure out things. I honestly liken it to a cult. I need help figuring out how to get my ds to snap out of this. He goes to a great school, is very smart and driven. He needs redirecting but I am concerned voicing my real concerns about this will push him further into it. He is saying he wants to take a break from school and I think it is partly to see if he can get this 'business' going.

Is anyone else dealing with this? I feel like there needs to be an online support group out there of concerned moms bc from what I can tell my ds is not alone. I just think he is more into it than others. Tate is a pretty terrible person so I think there is some shame in this on my part as well and maybe others who don't want to talk about it.

I am a journalist and am writing an article about Tate's appeal to boys and young men. I'd love to talk to OP and/or others who have observations on this topic (especially parents or teachers with kids who admire Tate or whose friends/classmates do). Happy to speak either on or off the record, please email me at TeenMasculinityArticle@gmail.com.
