I mean, there are tons of feral kids running around, for sure. |
Except my kid doesn't randomly run up to other kids and scream in their face, scaring the crap out of them. He also doesn't piss repeatedly on your tree, killing it. |
I've never had a random kid jump on me while going for a walk, run, or hike. Random kids don't don't use my yard or flowers as their toilet. I'll never understand how so many moronic dog owners make the comparison between dogs and kids. |

I am gobsmacked by how many people on here think that dogs should be euthanized. The movement to treat animals humanely actually preceded and informed the movement to end domestic abuse. If past is prologue, you are a short step away from promoting the euthanization of humans. I am not equating dogs with people, just pointing out that the way we treat animals matters. People who don't have empathy for animals likely don't have empathy for humans.
This thread is one of the saddest I have ever read and makes me fearful of where our society is headed. |
Nobody's saying to just put down dogs for the fun of it. But if dogs don't have owners and caretakers that are responsible with them and respectful of others... the solution is NOT to have poorly behaved dogs everywhere, or people bringing their pets with them everywhere. Personally I think people should be required to have lots of training before they are allowed to adopt a dog. |
I heard a conversation earlier this week where 2 people were advocating the same for having children. These are backwards steps for a progressive society. |
Why is requiring training for owners before adopting a dog, a "backwards step for a progressive society?" What's your solution for explosion of poorly behaved dogs and irresponsible owners? Nothing? Anything? |
Wanting untrainable dogs euthanized is not a lack empathy, PP. It’s humane, actually. It’s also responsible. I don’t see how you don’t get this. [OP] |
And I don't see how YOU don't see that someone who wants "untrainable" dogs (and who decides that they're untrainable?) euthanized lacks empathy. |
OK. [OP] |

It's 5am, and someone's dog is in the yard barking up a storm. Has for 10 minutes.
I got up 15 minutes ago because it's my normal wake up time, but noise laws apply to barking. Sadly, this is just normal among all the retractable leash using, jumpy, pee everywhere dogs that people don't want to be responsible for. |
No I’m not objecting to what side of the street to walk on. I’m saying that the solution to feed the dog treats until the other dog passes on the other side doesn’t work when both dogs have the same issue…. Happens in our neighborhood often… |
NP: also some dogs are still training/learning so they still bark/react until they learn the ropes or complete proper training. The owner is not necessarily “not doing anything” about the behavior. For example ours was reactive like this as a puppy (up until 9-12 months depending on the day- improved over time and with professional training help). A year later, she is awesome. Totally perfect even if another dog is going crazy. But it doesn’t always happen in a day, and in the meantime those dogs still need to be walked….and FWIW Im referring to a properly restrained dog who is barking etc at other dogs passing (which is a nuisance rather than a safety issue) |
That is not a solution. I walk my dog on the left. First, if I see a dog I have trained him to look at the dog and then back at me. If he doesn't bark I give him a treat. Sometimes I play pattern games where he is focusing on me. Not the dog. If i feel my dog is going to have a teaction i do a u turn and go the other way. It is better to avoid because if he barks and lunges than that is reinforced rather than not reacting. You basically dont want the dog to go over threshold for stress because he isn't going to listen to you. If you are upset, crying etc are you going to listen to reason? No, you have to do that before you get upset. |

We need to stop enabling and indulging the jerk dog owners. Stop saying "it's ok" or nothing at all when dogs approach you due to the owner's failure.
Start saying "I don't like that" "please be a better owner" "that's not cool" "get control of your dog" or something else that's honest, yet polite, when dog owners are disrespectful of you. |
