And how does one do that?

It’s not an optional program, it’s a county initiative. 1 device for every student.

My point exactly. PP is full of shit.

Huh, wonder why there’s an opt-out form on the FCPS website, then.

This is for middle /high school and it says you can opt out if you want your child to bring their own device to you. Tech isn’t going anywhere.

The 1:1 program is district wide and so is the opt-out form. I know logic and reason are hard for some of y’all to understand. I love that people keep giving you solutions, but all you want to do is complain. Maybe it’s time for homeschooling? But then I’d be very afraid of any kid schooled by some of y’all.

OK sweetie, so what does your child do when his/her classmates are on their laptops at school? How are they doing research for their social studies projects or putting together slides for their classroom presentation? How are they doing the standardized testing / other assessments? Please tell us, I really want to know.

Do you even hear yourself? Elementar age kids should NOT be making google slides.

I think people forget that 5-6 is in ES and is middle schools in other places in the US. A 5-6 grader should be using technology for research, presentations, projects. Should they be on a computer all day? No. But they should be using technology more frequently than K-4.

Exactly - this is like saying "ES aged kids should not be using microfiche, encyclopedias, or poster boards" in the 1980s.

True. Different question though here (this thread). Would you force parents and kids of second and third graders to take FCPS laptops home every single day just to charge them? Never mind the weight of laptops, safety and liability all around?

Most Chromebooks weigh 2.5 to 4 pounds. Your snowflakes can handle it. I promise.

Those "textbooks" you're all whining endlessly for, because you refuse to understand that it's not the 80s or 90s anymore, would weigh considerably more.

Next excuse?

The FCPS teachers do not wanna work.

Get a new song. This one is stupid and stale and you're embarrassing yourself.

Measured yesterday. Laptop that my 50 lb kid will have to carry back and forth is over 5 lbs (just the laptop … add then all the other stuff that kids need to bring to school). Give me any reputable doctor that will say this is ok. You are the one living in 80s and 90s thinking that parents will stay silent when schools are blatantly disregarding medical community when it suits them.

This. Why not, OP?

FCPS doesn’t use Chromebooks, idiot.

Our school said that the laptops have to “travel” with kids just to charge them at home.

Yes, the reason we were told is to charge them every night and (last year this was more pertinent) if they got covid and had to isolate, it they were quarantined, or if there was a snow day, they would have the computer at home for virtual school or stream in/check in.

I feel like they should have sorted out charging stations in each classroom by the start of this year so the computers don't need to come home every day in elementary school.

Someone who doesn't think kids need to be making useless slide shows instead of actual learning is a loser?

What makes these schools think anyone will remember to charge these at home? I have enough on my to do list, and don't want my child on the laptop at ALL during the school day. I won't be chargin anything and may just keep it at home like pp. That's a good idea.

Disagree. This particular group of 5th/6th graders had much of their elementary education messed up by covid and sh!tty fcps virtual bs, and many were on the laptops way too much last school year. They need to be off the computers. Once or twice a week for a project is reasonable. But fcps has schools using these laptops way too much.

NP, but real question: you really don’t think building the ability to effectively present data is pertinent learning in 2022? Building slide shows helps kids learn how to present data and reinforces their learning on the topic.
