Why is fcps making elementary kids drag laptops to/from school?

I teach third grade. Our grade level doesn’t plan on having them log in until next week at the earliest. After that they won’t be using their laptops daily. They didn’t last year. It will vary.

Why do 3rd graders need to be on laptops at all? These kids missed 1/3rd of K, all of a normal forsr
Grade
and had tons of covid disruptions last year and probably too much laptop time. Let them have one normal year of quality education.

Totally agree. And they didn’t get a chance to learn to write properly with pen and paper. The last thing my son needs is more screen time.

If they're going to copy something off a website, forcing them to write it out by hand rather than simply cut and paste would be more beneficial for their penmanship in grades k-3.

Have you seen the handwriting for current 6th graders? Its terrible. These are kids who did no writing for school for the last third of 3rd grade, all of 4th grade, and then some spent most of 5th on their laptops. Every kid should be writing by hand, for penmanship AND because it is proven to help the brain remember.

Gotta love DCUM making sweeping generalizations for a county with 180,000 kids.

So we should go right to the school admin or the regional principal if we have concerns regarding overuse of laptops/screen time?

You can, but they will still encourage use. It’ll fall on deaf ears.

I am getting concerned with all the reports of kids being on laptops all day. I thought we were done with that after the year schools were closed. If this becomes an issue, who is the person to go to?

I did just sign up for the lightspeed report so I can monitor the screentime.

No one, it’s a done deal.

Bring 30 parents with you and leave the laptops on the principals desk.

Yes. The policy comes from the top down. And take the concerns all the way to Dr. Reid.

What the hell, people? What school in 2022 do you think doesn't have students use laptops? Can't believe this is even a complaint. If you want all analog, (a) homeschool, and (b) hope your kid joins a tech-free commune when they grow up.

Again … the argument on this thread is due to the ridiculous request of some schools to carry laptops home EVERY SINGLE DAY … just to charge them.

Actually, you might be on to something here. At first, I thought that the policy is uniform across FCPS. Which school or school pyramid are you in? We are in Robinson pyramid and kids are required to carry laptops back home every day to charge them. I would be curious to know how widespread this policy is.

Oakton pyramid and that is our policy too.

People do not want the kids having to schlep laptops daily back and forth like middle aged accoutants. Almost everyone agrees that using the laptops every once in awhile for a special project is fine.

We are in Centreville area and this is not required at our school.

How many hours of use does a fully charged laptop get?
