Why is fcps making elementary kids drag laptops to/from school?

And how does one do that?

It’s not an optional program, it’s a county initiative. 1 device for every student.

My point exactly. PP is full of shit.

Huh, wonder why there’s an opt-out form on the FCPS website, then.

This is for middle /high school and it says you can opt out if you want your child to bring their own device to you. Tech isn’t going anywhere.

The 1:1 program is district wide and so is the opt-out form. I know logic and reason are hard for some of y’all to understand. I love that people keep giving you solutions, but all you want to do is complain. Maybe it’s time for homeschooling? But then I’d be very afraid of any kid schooled by some of y’all.

Many of those carts are in the rooms holding/charging the kids laptops. At least that been the case for my class for the past 2 years.

My cart only holds 26 and I have 29 kids!!

I’m sure you can charge 3 extra laptops in the actual classroom.

Tell me you have no idea how tight classroom space is without telling me.

Just like central office, people who aren’t in classrooms always have all the answers.

StandSteady brand has carts with capacity of 32 (and that is just from a random search). I bet there are many other brands and options.

I do agree that parents are not aware of all the classroom limitations, but how about we try to find a solution that will work for you and not hurt our kids? I promise parents are not out trying to spite teachers. On the contrary, if you say what you need to do your job well, we will happily help. However, please keep in mind that parents have valid health concerns for their kids when it comes to carrying heavy loads.

Sweet, you gonna pony up for that $1200 StandSteady cart?

Take a closer look, many are in $400 to $600 range. Also, generosity of parents might just surprise you. With sarcastic attitude, you might alienate parents.

If the parents would split the cost, yes I would donate so my kids don’t have to carry the laptops back and forth. I would donate extra to cover families that can’t afford it.

The issue is kids have homework that needs to be completed on the laptops. They need to take the laptops home to work on them. Many kids don’t have their own computer in order to check schoology at home or what not. Last year our teachers all posted homework online and even worksheets that had to be printed. I hated it.

A lot of elementary schools have a no homework policy. What school are your children at?
where is this no homework policy? Our school gives lots of homework starting in 1st grade. Math, social studies, vocabulary, word work, fixit sentences, test reviews, reading, etc. are assigned as homework each year.

We are at a no homework school and my child was really struggling in math. I begged for homework just so I could see what they were doing in class and help (no math work ever came home-all on the computer) and the teacher said she wasn't allowed to send homework.

I’m sorry to say but if we are to trade insults, you don’t seem too sharp yourself. If a parent refuses FCPS laptop, they must bring their own and take it home every single day. Discussion on this forum is how to avoid carrying laptops to and from school (in early ES).

They are praying to go back to distance learning when they could watch Netflix with their dog most of today while eating takeout from Postmates.
The FCPS teachers do not wanna work.

I didn’t sign the form that said I was responsible for any laptop damage. I crossed of that para and wrote that I could not keep the laptop safe from damage if it came home and would not take responsibility for it if it did come home.

If there are 22 laptops that need to be charged, find it how any outlets are in the room. There has to be at least 2 if not more. Donate a few electrical strips. Then again the school would probably say they cannot prevent theft if the laptops are left in the classroom.

I miss when they would have a math worksheet of homework and maybe something written. He carried this laptop to and from school daily last year and never used it at home besides to charge.

I didn’t see laptops out for my kindergarten child so I’m hoping/expecting that she won’t have to carry it. I remember my friend telling me that her tiny son had difficulty carrying his backpack with the laptop that was too heavy for him last year. She said he would tip over. The boy was the smallest in his class.

Are you always this dramatic? Chromebooks are not heavy. Buy your kid a backpack and tell them to wear both straps. Done. No, you are not getting paper "worksheets."

You are if you pay for private school, which is appallingly pricey option we took. I wish there was a low-tech immersion option the way there are foreign language options. But FCPS is firmly of the opinion that round peg children should be hammered into square holes.

If at all.

Another parent here … amount of time kids spend on laptops is a separate topic.

Personally, I am looking for a good advice from teachers and principals how to avoid having kids carry laptops to and from schools. I don’t want to go and complain at our school since I am very well aware how much everyone has on their plate as it is. I would rather approach our school with a potential solution than bother them with a complaint. Would a PTA meeting be a good place to talk this out and find a compromise?

If the issue is cart space then the PTA could do a fundraiser in order to supply teachers with bigger carts. That said there are lots of things PTAs fund raise for but it doesn't hurt to at least ask if this is something they have considered.

before anyone jumps to conclusions --- let's see the proof that the police dept in the other county actually sent something to a legit fcps account.

Until we have that proof, we don't know who screwed up.

Thank you, I will try to reach out to PTA.

OK sweetie, so what does your child do when his/her classmates are on their laptops at school? How are they doing research for their social studies projects or putting together slides for their classroom presentation? How are they doing the standardized testing / other assessments? Please tell us, I really want to know.

Do you even hear yourself? Elementar age kids should NOT be making google slides.
