Anonymous wrote:OP here - thanks for the useful comments. If you read my original question, I am picking according to 1. strength of school and 2. proximity to downtown DC/ work. If I look at these two, the Whitman and BCC clusters are the best bet. I am not wealthy in DC-terms if you are only looking at only $$$$ income, but I am an educated international professional with smart kids, so obviously I am looking for like-minded kids/ parents, so we can feel like a good fit. So, I am not looking for wealth, but fit. As a single Mom, I NEED the schools to be strong and I WANT the kids who attend these schools to be similarly smart and ambitious. Not because I am snotty or snobby as someone suggested, but because those are my values and those are the values I want to install into my kids. I am tending towards the Pyle/Whitman cluster, I like the 20816 zip code; lots of green space, quiet, nice neighborhood; easy commute to downtown.

So, what you think other schools don’t have smart kids whose parents valve academics? Go to Whitman. Lots of folks think like you and better for the rest of us not to have our kids exposed to people like you.

OP here - did you even read my post? Or read it carefully? I stated that 1. school has to be strong. 2. Has to be relatively close to DC/ downtown (but in MD). Pls suggest alternatives then, since it seems you are not satisfied with my potential choices.

Whitman is not close to downtown so your post makes no sense. BCC or the down county schools make far more sense for commute. Strong school is subjective. You are really looking for rich schools.

OP here - PP, what is "down county" schools?
We used to live 10 minutes from where we would live if my kids go to Whitman. Kids would take school bus to Whitman. So, yes, it would be an easy commute for me to the office; only 10 minutes more than when we lived in NW DC. We have always lived in NW DC and 20816 and 20815 are the neighborhoods we are familiar with. That's why I am looking at those two school zones.

PP, you are a typical DCUM poster who thinks you know the other persons' life and what their motivations are and you just make assumptions. You are judgmental and sound toxic. No, I am not looking for rich schools, since I myself am not rich, so I am actually not an ideal fit for Whitman in that respect. I am looking for strong schools, not far from downtown, in neighborhoods we are familiar with. Does that better clarify for you?

Read your post. You are very comfortable. Stick to whitman. It would not be 10 minutes more with traffic. Anyone looking at that area is wealthy and given the rent ranges you posted, extremely comfortable.

OP here - I am not wealthy. Did you read my original post? I am only able to rent/purchase a condo. And the condo would be 10 minutes further out than our previous condo. I timed it, so I know.

OP - thanks PP; that's probably what will happen. I just hope I will not feel like an outcast as a single-earner/ single mom/ living in a condo.

Single earner and being single are not a brig deal. You are creating drama where there is not. As a single earner you are probably earning more than many dual income families.

If you choose Whitman you will have bigger concerns than just that.

OP here - thanks PP. I am not creating any drama, it seems you are. I was inquiring to educate myself of my options. Nothing wrong with that. And I am not a high earner for DC standards, not at all. And definitely a very low (single earner) for the Whitman cluster. Pls do not make assumptions without reading my original post.

Best is subjective and the school that is the best fit for your child.

OP here - well, I guess wealth is a relative term, there is a huge spectrum of what people consider wealthy. I really do not think I am. But I am sure you know it better than I do lol.

OP, I completely respect your choice to move into the Whitman/BCC cluster if that is what works best for you. I just want you to be aware that it sounds like you have some misconceptions about the types of people that live outside of Bethesda. In my Einstein-feeder neighborhood there are there are a lot of very educated people (Ph.D.s, people with international careers) as well as people from other walks of life which is something that we value. My husband and I each have multiple advanced degrees and we do not feel even remotely out of place. The elementary school has a Spanish immersion program for all students so that attracts families that want that kind of language exposure for their kids.

I myself attended Whitman, and when my parents bought their Bethesda house it cost roughly the same, inflation-adjusted, as our DCC house did last year. The families that attend Whitman now are just not the same as they were 25 years ago.

OP here - thanks PP, but as I have mentioned, my choice of either the BCC or Whitman cluster is mainly due to: 1. strength of schools; 2. proximity to DC/ work; and 3. proximity to our previous NW DC neighborhood, therefore we know some people in these neighborhoods/ are familiar with the neighborhoods. Our family has been through quite a lot of changes the past few years, so familiarity gives us comfort.

Again, that's FINE, I'm just responding to the following comment that you made: "I am an educated international professional with smart kids, so obviously I am looking for like-minded kids/ parents, so we can feel like a good fit." From that perspective there are a lot of other schools that are also close to the DC border where you would find "like-minded kids/parents".

I'm the single mom from an earlier post who is demographically identical to OP and made the same point. Honestly, I give up. Let the Whitman vs. BCC parents fight about which is best, and OP can be assured that her kids are among "like minded peers" in some of the wealthiest schools in the state.

I haven’t read all of the posts, but OP don’t worry about this (and don’t go in with this chip on your shoulder- if you look for judgment you will see it). I’m a Whitman and Pyle parent and I barely know or don’t know whose parents are married, divorced, never married, etc. I find the people I talk to perfectly nice but they don’t know about my personal life nor I theirs, unless we strike up an independent friendship.

Thanks PP - true, these schools are huge; they are not like the Elementary Schools, where parents would get to know each other. thanks!

OP here - thanks PP; I stated my reasons and am sticking to them. I am not considering moving to Silver Spring. I literally do not know a soul there; nor anything there.

Honey, at this point nobody on this thread wants you to move to Silver Spring, please for the love of god stay away. If you want to continue thinking of people who live in Silver Spring as the uneducated masses, go ahead, just know that when you post things like that, we will continue to correct you.
