We looked on the eastern panhandle area. Paw paw, Capacon, Wardensville. The prices are still 5-10k an acre, which is decent. And like $250 for property tax. But the nice houses are in gated communities. It had a real haves and have-nots vibe, which felt so uncomfortable as we drove by trailer parks situated next to 775k homes in gated developments

You didn't look hard enough. I'm typing this in a house in WV that's worth a lot more than that, in a neighborhood of other high end homes -- with neither gates nor trailer parks anywhere in sight.

Alright well good for you? I can't afford more than 800k for my second home and frankly don't want to. And I don't want to "look hard enough" to see past racist microagressions k?

Well, with your attitude it was likely a non-starter from the get go. You shouldn't have even bothered looking.

Ok now I'm sure OP is a troll and a hsit stirrer

Davis/Thomas/Canaan Valley. The higher elevation makes it cooler and less humid in the summer than DC. It’s delightful. You can visit Blackwater Falls, tons of hiking. Canaan Valley actually is it’s own micro-climate and has plant-life often found only in Canada. It’s very interesting.

Straight white people no less. Good luck having a good experience while being LGBTQ or a person of color in WV. I literally saw, with my own eyes, a black family refused service at a Dairy Queen in West Virginia. Their SUV had NY plates. I've also interacted with white hillbilly's that use the N word like it's just normal.

Again, you’re generalizing. Shepherdstown has pride flags and BLM flags on virtually every downtown shop and home, zero Trump flags, and population that would never in a million years tolerate any of that.

It’s so interesting how folks think nothing of generalizing about an entire state’s population, then call themselves liberal and open-minded and put their noses up like they’re better. Such hypocrites.

Shepherdstown has a population smaller than a single building in Adams Morgan forgive us for the lack of interest in being surrounded by a sea of literal tens of thousands with the opposite viewpoint.

How many buildings in Adams Morgan have 2000 residents? I can’t think of any. In any event, Jefferson County as a whole went nearly 50/50 for Biden, like many Virginia counties just outside the beltway did.

I’m not saying the politics are ideal, trust me. I’m also not saying I’m willing to live here full time and give up my DC house. That’s not gonna happen for a variety of reasons. But damn if this isn’t a great set up for a second home.

They actually went 55/45 for Trump.

Nope, WV has Joe Manchin, that double talking ah*le. Calls himself a Democrat! Just a joke. I’ll stay in nova, thank you.

NP. Then tell us where you are.

Right. Which is why I said "nearly."

Manchin is 1000 times better than Youngkin. Flaws and all. You cannot be serious.

The strangest thing about WV having a racist population, if it is indeed racist, is that WV started as the western part of Virginia which wanted nothing to do with slavery.

Is it really all that strange? Cultural attitudes shift over time. Wisconsin was once a progressive haven at the forefront of labor rights before succumbing to the thrall of Rush Limbaugh-style Republicans and is now a right-to-work state.

I didn't know that about West Virginia

PP living in WV. I recommend the eastern panhandle (towns already mentioned here like Shephardstown, Harper’s Ferry etc) or around Thomas & Davis/Canaan Valley.

What about buying near Berkeley Springs?

When we were last in WV, I was asked if I was part of the deep state, its a lot of Trump lol. I don't see people as any nicer there than here (but don't see them as mean here personally).

that would be a hard line for me, not to mention that my family is biracial, and immigrants. I'm sure they do have some lovely scenery, though.

Ha.. I said the same thing the first time I met someone from there when I was living in CA. And it's in the south.

Most of WV is indeed a bit of a dump. But nothing compared to downtown DC.

For starters, your Trump-voting WV neighbors don't leave big piles of human faeces outside your garage. Or throw up in your front yard. Both of which have happened to me in the past 24 hours.

I'll be glad to leave the progressive pleasures of DC life to my woke neighbors.

And yes, it's amusing how DC progressives are always terribly concerned about the poor, as long as they are not white males.

yes, there's difference between urban poverty vs rural poverty. Urban poverty translates to lots of homeless on the streets due to high col, usually. Rural poverty translates into no economic opportunities to get out or services to help the poor.
