"Spring" Egg Hunt for DCPS PK Class - Is this usual?

Anonymous
We don't celebrate easter or christmas, and we would be fine with this. OP you need to relax. This is an egg hunt. The kids aren't being indoctrinated with any religious teachings. Let your kid have fun.

All the PPs saying egg hunt has nothing to do with Easter would also argue that the holiday tree isn’t a Christmas tree. Just because Christian’s incorporated pagan rituals doesn’t mean it isn’t associated with Christianity now.

Oh, I would absolutely call it a Christmas tree. In fact, I think it's silly to use the word "holiday tree". However, neither the Easter egg hunt or the Christmas tree are religious symbols or part of Christian liturgy. They are cultural practices associated with Christianity, but not religious practices. Teaching kids about them doesn't constitute religious indoctrination or proselytizing, and anyone can enjoy them. It's not like they are making your kids participate in the Eucharist.

Her teacher contacted all the parents yesterday asking that they contribute plastic eggs and candy for a Spring Egg Hunt for the class this Friday (before Spring Break). We do not celebrate Easter and DH and I were pretty taken aback that a public school was holding such a characteristically Easter tradition. Is this a normal occurrence? This is our first year in DCPS.

Oh FFS OP - get over your woke snowflake self. Egg hunts have nothing to do with religious Easter. You have a long way to go in school my friend and if you are going to wear yourself out with every perceived micro aggression you’re never going to make through high school. It’s been a long two years - put a sock in it and let the kids have some fun.

OP, do what you think is best and ignore the bigoted riffraff.

Nothing bigoted about the PP's post.

Teacher here. My own school would never do an egg hunt. because of the association with Easter (whether right or wrong). I have been teaching for 15 years and haven't heard of anyone doing this. I probably wouldn't make a stink if my kids school had one, but their school wouldn't.

we should be friends! i'm a total atheist and i absolutely adore christmas trees and egg hunts. I would love if our school had one! We do one at home each year and my kid looks forward to it so much, even thought he's never heard the word "jesus" in his life.

This is sad for your kid on so many levels.

It's okay - I pity kids who grow up brainwashed with fantastical stories about Jesus. So we can feel sorry for each others kids!

I know. First and foremost Jesus was definitely black.

I would forward it to the principal with a calm but forthright note that you don't think this is appropriate.

This.
I’ve learned a lot of lessons since moving to dc 20 years ago. I was beside myself at the school Christmas pageant- until I realized how much it meant to the community I wasn’t really part of. We are talking generations going way back. Sometimes you gotta let things go and just learn from the moment.

It gets complicated. This is a community rife with antisemitism. Not sure what the answer is.

So having an Easter egg hunt for a DCPS PK class is antisemitic?

And you wonder why Democrats are going to get crushed in November. I'm sure Laura Ingraham will lead with this on her show as an example of how ridiculous progressive liberals are.

Ummnmm. Easter is a religious holiday, and eggs/egg hunts are indeed part of church sponsored religious celebrations. So, I think you could try not centering yourself and policing people who are not Christian from worrying about religion in public schools. Yikes!

Throughout history, people across the world have given each other eggs at spring festivals to mark the seasons -- completely unrelated to any religion. Eggs represent new life and rebirth of life in Spring when many animals lay eggs and many lambs, etc are birthed.

Yes, early Christians in Mesopotamia dyed eggs in the period after Easter and the Orthodox Churches continued this, and from there it spread into Western Europe. It is an ancient custom, like many others that was absorbed into Easter celebrations, but is not in and of itself religious. It was not and is not actually a religious-based practice, just an old tradition kept alive by various religions and reflects springtime moreso than anything religious.

But the point is that animals giving birth in Spring is a scientific phenomenon that merits attention. So much so that it has been celebrated pretty much forever by everybody in one way or another. Including eventually, Christians, but not exclusively -- and if the school isn't calling it an Easter egg, its just an egg like any other in Springtime. Unless you make a big stink and call the egg an Easter egg.

If the White House can do an egg hunt, why not a school?
