Ummnmm. Easter is a religious holiday, and eggs/egg hunts are indeed part of church sponsored religious celebrations. So, I think you could try not centering yourself and policing people who are not Christian from worrying about religion in public schools. Yikes!

+ a million. Typical Christian majority bullshit. "Just relax!"

[b wrote:Anonymous]It doesn't surprise me if you're at a school that is just beginning to gentrify and some of the teachers haven't gotten the memo. From their perspective, if they're working with really seriously disadvantaged kids, what the school provides might be all that some kids get.

I would forward it to the principal with a calm but forthright note that you don't think this is appropriate.

This is what I was thinking too. I'm not Christian, but I would let this one go and let the kids have fun.

Nope, I’m sure it’s not a troll.
These are the kind of whack a doodle things DC teachers deal with!

Well, I'm an atheist, but okay

I’m an atheist, so we don’t celebrate Easter. But this is like Christmas trees, to me, which is a secular part of a Christian holiday. It wouldn’t bother me, but if it bothers you, just have your kid not participate.

It's pagan, and while the tradition itself has been co-opted as part of Christian Easter celebrations, an egg hunt itself is not religious. This isn't happening in our class, so I can't be sure, but I would imagine the teacher could incorporate all sorts of learning with such an activity (counting, sorting, fine motor, etc). I am not Christian, and if this were happening in my kid's class I would think it was cute. But if you think it's inappropriate, by all means raise it with the teacher, but before doing so, maybe examine if it is really worth stopping this.

"Just have your kid not participate" is not a good answer when it's school, where they are legally required to be. This is why the First Amendment protects school children from religious instruction in the classroom.

Check your privilege. Christmas trees, easter hunts, etc., actually do bother people who are, for example, Jewish.

This is not a violation of the first amendment. This is why just have your kid not participate is the appropriate response. It is not religious instruction.

Agree with the PP who said to have an alternative activity to propose when you raise this with the teacher. I'm sure they're couching this as an fun/educational activity in terms of springtime and not Easter, but I understand that it's deeply associated with Easter and why that is very iffy in public schools.

No, an egg hunt is not part of any Christian religious service. Bunnies and egg hunts are completely secular and are not mentioned in any Christian religious texts.

How is this any different than a teacher reading “The Polar Express” in December or your kids singing Rudolph at the holiday concert?

The Supreme Court has ruled that public schools may observe secular components of holidays that are also religious. Sorry, it’s not about my privilege; it’s the law.

Both of you can go blow it out your ass. This is harmless fun.
