In the 8-1 vote in favor of the bill, County Council Member Andrew Friedson was the only one opposed. He unsuccessfully tried to amend the bill to exempt smaller restaurants.

This is insane. How does a ramen shop comply? Or a pupuseria? And why should they have to?

They don’t. This legislation is so stupid. Kudos to Andrew Friedson for his sanity. The solution is for restaurants to no longer offer any children’s menu to avoid having some unappealing meal on hand that no one orders. Congratulations County Council. You’ve just eliminated reasonably priced kids meals for families who rely on them to feed their children. Good grief.

. The same public health authority structure that wanted everyone to eat 7 servers of potatoes/rice/bread every day?

The same public health authority structure that told us margarine was healthier than butter?

The same public health authority structure that approved the many drugs that have since been yanked from the market after being founded to cause injury and death?

How ‘bout they shut up and stay out of it. Their track record is less than stellar.

Children shouldn’t be drinking milk at all - skim or otherwise. There are much healthier vegan options for them.

Not almond or oat “milk”

Those are full of unhealthy lectins.

Yuck!

I am so glad this passed. the child obesity problem in montgomery county will finally be over! If you see a fat kid in a few months, you know there is a restaurant out there that didnt comply.

I think the restaurants should be required to check everyone’s weight anf height and then cakculate their BMI. Anyone is obese should be banned from ordering a full meal.

So McDonald's will change their menu just in MoCo..develop a new whole grain bun for us?

Or they'll close up shop and leave the county.

It's a ridiculous bill.

throw some veggies in the ramen. Have veggies offered as a side. It’s really not that hard.

I'd settle for some grilled chicken nuggets with a side of carrots.

There's a reason parents choose Chik Fil A

This is a solution looking for a problem. My guess is that, given the MC demographics, 95% of the restaurants already meet this standard. But now they have to spend time and resources confirming that they comply. Simply stupid. It is another example of why most of the Council members need real jobs.

NP... Complaining about a healthy food option being made available for kids has got to be one of the stupidest right wing freakouts I've seen all week.

But hey, you do you.

Moderate Democrat here. This is simply a silly law that simply was not needed. Just because some idiot (who likely has never had a real job) came up with idea does not make it a good one. I suspect 90% of the MC restaurants satisfy the standard. A solution, as noted above, looking for a problem.

Did Rice survey County restaurants? Did he find that a substantial number of them offered only unhealthy options? No. No. But I am sure he feels good about himself.

More like 90% of restaurants only have some generic Sysco junk food items like breaded fried chicken nuggets and french fries as their kids menu item.

Would they have to use whole-grain Ramen?
