I don't fault the team for choosing a bland name. I think it's understandable that, in an era where racial/ethnic awareness is evolving very rapidly, a team would be concerned about choosing a name that it might come to appreciate 5-10 years down the road is insensitive in a way they did not realize at the time. My understanding is the team decided not to go with Warriors or with any name using the word "Red" because they were concerned that it still might be too closely associated with Native American culture. But they could have done a lot more to come up with an good logo, good uniforms, etc., and showed some enthusiasm for the change as an organization. This was a marketing fail from top to bottom.

I never understood why they didn’t keep the name Redskins but change the mascot from a Native American to a redskin potato.

The new ownership group is definitely trying to get a groundswell going to being back the old name but they should just do the red tails.

Or at least they should have named it something with two syllables so the traditional song could be used.

The Commanders was a horrible choice. There were so, so many good suggestions that it's clear the name selected was meant as a rebuke to those who wanted the name changed in the first place.

I absolutely love this. The “offended” group standing up against the name change and cancel culture. Can’t wait to see where this goes.

I'm too lazy to read the article, but the original native supporters they trotted out to support the team turned out to not actually be native american when the post started digging

I'll help you with your laziness. This is the NAGA - Native American Guardian Assoc. making this request.

This is their position:

The name "Redskins" carries deep cultural, historical, and emotional significance, honoring the bravery, resilience, and warrior spirit associated with Native American culture. It was never intended as a derogatory or offensive term but as a symbol of respect and admiration. Changing the name abruptly disregards the positive legacy that the Redskins name has built over the years and disorients the passionate fans who have invested their emotions, time, and unwavering support in the team.
We acknowledge the concerns surrounding cultural sensitivity and the need to foster inclusivity. However, we firmly believe that there are alternative ways to honor and respect Native American heritage without erasing it. By reclaiming the Redskins name, we have the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue, educational initiatives, and collaborations with Native American communities. Together, we can promote cultural appreciation, address misconceptions, and work towards a more inclusive society.
The name "Commanders" fails to capture the essence, tradition, and historical weight associated with the Redskins. It lacks the uniqueness, emotional connection, and pride that our team's original name embodies. The change to "Commanders" dilutes our team's identity and weakens the connection with its devoted fanbase. By restoring the Redskins name, we reinstate a symbol of unity, strength, and shared identity that has inspired generations of fans.

Enough with erasing history.

Yep, that's one of those groups.

You can thank white liberal sports writers for killing the Redskins name. American Indians overwhelmingly support the name as the Washington Post’s survey from few years back proved.

No. They should bring back the only true name for the team: Redskins.

A bunch of privileged, non-indigenous football fans should not be lecturing anyone, much less demanding, about returning to the name "redskins." That term is derogatory on its face. And it's repulsive that any of you think your longing for the "good old days" of Skins football outweighs the legitimate grievances of native people. It doesn't. And while there may (or may not) be some native people who are fine with the name, many are not. And you don't get to just ignore those feelings, or tell them they should be ok with it, just so you can have a football mascot. Do you even understand how stupid you people look?

So sit down. STFU about the Redskins name and move on to Commanders or whatever they decide to call it.
