Is getting a college degree just a huge scam?

My colleague who works in cybersecurity has no degree. He makes $90k.

I have a degree and make $70K.

College itself is not a scam. College with 70K+/year is a scam.

I would rather send my kid to UVA instead of CMU so that I can save 150K+ in four years and use that money for him/her to work on improving the golf game and other music activities. As they said, most businesses get done on the business course.

It all depends. For some UVA is a scam. If you are outgoing, frat house, drinking, partying type, UVA is a good place. But if you are an introvert nerd type, CMU is a better fit and provides more support for career counseling and academic help.

+1 for comp sci, pick Cmu; You'll earn back the $150K in two years or less. UVa isn't Julliard??

This is complete B.S. A CS CMU grad will not make 70K more than a CS UVA grad. There are always exceptions but 99.9999% of CS CMU grads will make the same salary as CS UVA grad. Not everyone who graduated from CMU becomes Marc Ewing. My oldest graduated in CS from CMU in 2018, and his younger brother graduated from UVA in 2019 also in CS. The older brother has 110k salary while the younger brother has a 105k salary.

Some CMU grads can make the $150k difference back in one year. UVA CS is weak. The "teaching" faculties at UVA CS are terrible and are out of the industry for decades. They don't do research. Some top firms that pay the big $ will only recruit from CMU.

For CS there really is no contest between CMU and UVa.

College went downhill at the time there was the push to make everyone go. Now the pendulum has swung back to trades. College was simply over subscribed.

Oh, I attended. I just chose to stop attending after one year. I found myself more likely to be date raped or narrowly directed into a MRS. degree, than educated. Small, expensive, SLAC with a bunch of entitled white people waiting to inherit their Daddy's company. BORING, to an intellectually talented person.

I found traveling the world to be much more of a gain than college, and my experiences overseas and with meeting diverse people led to my later success.

If it is computer science related, I'd say go with CMU which has considerably higher salaries in that field on average. For something like Sociology, I'd say go with UVA.
