Are those schools test optional? Yes. Are quite a few of those schools reaches for his gpa? Also yes.

There is no way for some of the schools on that list. Waste of application funds.

and others. Just keep that SAT to yourself. These schools really are test optional. If the score doesn't help, don't send it.

He's below the mean GPA at GMU so while I think he has a good shot, he's not guaranteed. Make a good case with the rest of the application.

Pp here. Based on my kids fcps naviance, anyone with a 3.1-3.2 gpa gets into those schools regardless of SAT. I know them because that's where my kid's gpa is. Si we have been looking for solid matches.

With a 3.5 gpa, OP's kid is in.

That's not the case at our FCPS school. The Naviance looks like everyone with a 3.7+ gets in and after that it's more variable.

I have a hard time believing that, or perhaps your information is not current.

For VCU, every single person with a 3.0 or better got admitted. (and a few under 3.0 got admitted too).
For GMU, every person above a 3.0 was admitted (except there were two waitlisted with ultimate admission unknown).

Both VCU and GMU appear to have at least 100 applications.

With UMW, everyone above a 3.0 was admitted (only one by waitlist).

For Radford, a 2.5 and above GPA was sufficient.

With all of these, the stats required a year ago were a little higher (i.e. 3.1 or 3.2). As a result of Covid, they seem to have shifted down a bit (probably b/c kids' GPAs took a hit last year).

I stand by my statement:

All of these are locks:
VCU
GMU
UMW
RadU

I'm the PP. For our HS, the Naviance data seems to have a lot of missing data because we should have more applications to GMU than are showing based on what I know from years prior. Our VCU has 3 non-acceptances between 3-3.25, but is otherwise similar to what you wrote, but for GMU there's only about 20 people with GPAs between 3.0 and 3.7 and there are 6 non-acceptances, 2 question marks and 12 green checks--so a little better than 50-50 that I initially wrote, but not a shoe in. All the people have an SAT score and the ones with the lower SATs (sub 1050ish) are the ones with the x's for the most part--and 2 of the non-acceptances seem around 3.5. (These are all weighted GPAS).

Really? Which ones? Skidmore, maybe? Clemson? Show your choices but know that people will lookup the CDS and post those.

Looks like a list of R-M-S to me, as every college list should be.

Agree it’s a great list. Good luck, OP! It will work out.

Ok I’m the originator of the list. Yes, a range, but all potential in an R-T-S lens. I really just want this family to feel hopeful. There are some great schools out there that will be happy to admit their son and hopefully will be a good fit. Best of luck.

This is why grade inflation hurts everyone in the district.

If your list had delineated that a bit more, maybe it works. But as several noted multiple schools are a reach too far. There are for sure good schools that will admit him, but telling them Elon and Trinity and others are within reach is outside of any concept of reach I have heard. He could look at this list and say Oh those sound really good and what is actually realistic could disappoint. IMO what OP needs to do is find a really solid ED school that their son is a target for that he loves and a safety that he is a shoe-in for that he loves. For the ED target, look for a school your DS loves where a 3.5 weighted GPA is above the median and that is test-optional with less than 50% of students submitting test scores (and not just in the pandemic year) and that ideally admits more than 50% of its applicants (or has a really high ED admission rate). For a safety look for a school where 3.5 weighted GPA is above the 75% and they admit more than 50% of applicants. Then you can play around as much as you like with other options. A big decision guiding this is whether he really loves LACs or Universities. This list is a good start, but I wouldn't show it to him without doing your own CDS research and culling it and then separating it out into Reach-Target-Safety and noting LACs and Universities.
