Limits and cuts are coming.

Late last week Biden held marathon meetings with nearly two dozen progressive and moderate lawmakers to get his agenda passed.

He's now considering limits to tuition-free community college and universal childcare to cut down the massive, progressive-backed $3.5 trillion package in a bid to pacify moderates and spending hawks.

The White House and Democratic leaders are weighing attaching or strengthening income caps to a number of key agenda items, according to two officials familiar with the discussions.

I hope the the child tax credit income caps are $150,000 per household because what it is now is ridiculous. Why are people making $400,000 getting paid $1,200/month for four children?

As long as families with two healthy adult parents but only have one income (ie having a stay at home parent), we should not be penalizing high income households. If the government can subsidize the life choices of those who dont want to work, they can also provide benefit to those who do work.

If one person is choosing not to work that's on them. But the household is still making $400,000. There is no reason the income limits are this high.

Sure there is. People making $400k have expenses too. What makes your arbitrary cutoff number better than $400k?

Oh yeah, the government needs to subsidize your speedboat, $1 million house, and everything else. Please.

I dont understand why they dont do sliding scales based on the fed gov pay scale. They would only have to do the coding once and then update as needed. The scale is already defined and it would make bills like this a lot more palatable for the general public. 400k is a ridiculous cutoff but 75k in no COL adjustment areas which would then be increased according to areas with HCOL would be way more acceptable.

I look forward to the day we can stop pretending Sinema and Manchin are anything resembling Democrats.

Oh well, too bad so sad. Moderate Dem here and I agree with her. $3.5 trillion is too much for too little. Maybe if the Dems hadn't been stuffing their plates with all the cookies they would have gotten something passed but $1 trillion for free childcare, free nationwide pre-school, free college, free maternity/paternity leave, free school lunches, free housing on top of $300 per child per month payments already lining pockets.

Everything's FREE. What exactly are the parents paying for?

Oh good. Yes that's what the rich want. Let's fight against people who have to work and the poor. The rich love it while they don't work, get all their investment gains and don't pay taxes that we do. Don't you understand that these basics are what will lift everyone to a better standard of living? All of us? With a healthy, nourished and educated population, rather than dangerous, ignorant people? The rich do NOT want that. It threatens their way of life.

Manchin is already bought by the lobbyist.

He doesn’t care that people in his state don’t have running water. In this country!

I get that poor and stupid people think that $400k is filthy rich, but comments like this don’t prove much of anything beyond the fact that you work as a walmart greeter. $400k HHI is not rich in any major city in this country.

The fact that you choose to live in a major city is your problem not your fellow taxpayers

Oh, sweetie. Yes. It is.
Just because you can't have everything you want doesn't mean you aren't rich.

+1. 400k is quite rich. What are you blowing your money on PPP? My husband makes a fraction of that and I SAH and even we still are able to live comfortably and save a nice cushion at the same time. We live within our means and most purchases are needs rather than wants (and being savers, we've had the pleasure of being screwed over by the govt that hates savers and rewards spenders).
