The methodology explains the criteria for ranking but not about the definition of "national university" for the purposes of this specific list. |
What are National Universities? National Universities offer a full range of undergraduate majors as well as master's and doctoral degrees. In many cases, they place strong emphasis on research and receive federal money to support their research endeavors. There are 392 National Universities – 209 public, 179 private and four for-profit – based on the categories that The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education establishes. 7. What are National Liberal Arts Colleges? National Liberal Arts Colleges emphasize undergraduate education. To be included in this category, colleges must award at least 50% of their degrees in liberal arts disciplines, such as languages and literature, biology and life sciences, philosophy, cultural studies and psychology. There are 223 National Liberal Arts Colleges – 199 private, 24 public and zero for-profit schools. 8. What are Regional Universities and Regional Colleges? Like National Universities, Regional Universities offer a full range of undergraduate programs and provide graduate education at the master's level. However, they differ by offering few, if any, doctoral programs. Of the 596 Regional Universities, 245 are public, 341 are private and 10 are for-profit. The 371 Regional Colleges – including 170 public institutions, 190 private schools and 11 for-profits – focus on undergraduate education but grant fewer than 50% of their degrees in liberal arts disciplines. The Regional Colleges category includes some institutions where only a small number of degrees awarded are at the bachelor's level. Regional Universities and Regional Colleges are placed into one of four geographic categories: North, South, Midwest and West. |
Actually, Princeton is widely viewed as having the best undergraduate education in the country, and the many consecutive years of #1 US News rankings only play a modest roll in that assessment. |
Only problem is that it is it Prinzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzton, Snooze Jersey. |
This is silly and biased, there are 100 different metrics that US news can choose from but according to you rankings should be based on yield?!?!?! |
My annual amazement that Rose-Hulman is ranked ahead of Harvey Mudd in the 'engineering - no graduate programs' category. Both are great schools, that's just not my perception of the way those schools would be ordered. But having them in the top two positions makes sense.

UVA booster? |
So no more UVA s UMD threads?! |
Dartmouth is an awfully mediocre school. One wonders where it would be if it hadn’t lucked out by joining the Ivy League back in the day. |
Rejected by Dartmouth? |
+1 Almost no one chooses to go to Chicago or Columbia if they think they can be accepted at HYPSM. |
+1 |
I do think Princeton is a grat undergrad education and experience, but I don't think that is necessarily the case with a number of schools high on the list. |
Nobody cares what you and your grandma think. |
