Fights at ACHS/TC

I haven't seen any actual arguments for getting rid of SROs beyond some kids' discomfort. Preventing violence is more important than feelings. Full stop. And I'm not rich or white so miss me with the "this is just rich white outrage" comments I've seen on the ACPS Facebook group. I mean honestly, kids can't overcome feeling a bit nervous while walking past an SRO but it's fine for everyone to be forced to witness violent beatings and now a shooting? How safe do people feel now that someone's been shot and the police have had to be called a ridiculous amount of times in the first month of school? This is insanity.

Another POC here. We moved from Alexandria when my oldest was in kindergarten because of the schools. He’s now 14. Things seem to have gotten worse, not better. Don’t make this about race.

I am not sure the SROs will resolve some of tmany of the issues leading to the violence. My son tells me that GW is so incredibly crowded that he can't even get to his locker after school because the halls are so full. He had to call me from school to get picked up once on a day that it was pouring rain, and it was so noisy that I had to ask him to repeat himself (screaming) four times before I could understand what he was saying. There is no way that kids don't feel under incredible stress just due to that environment, and never mind the pandemic, problems kids may have at home, food insecurity etc.

probably but the parent probably insists their child is fine and doesn't need the class

I went to a Fairfax County Police meeting about school violence/shootings the summer of 2019 and there were FCPS members there as well as local and state elected officials. The biggest talking point and takeaway was how important SROs were in preventing school violence. There were two SROs there who spoke about some of their experiences preventing fights and even suicides and shootings. They also talked about how they try to build relationships with youth so that they have positive police experiences and trust law enforcement. It boggles my mind that in the blink of an eye SROs are being removed from schools with absolutely no evidence or studies that it will have a positive effect.

School boards and politicians are influenced by Twitter, not stories.

They shut down the football game with 4 minutes left because a stampede occurred when a firecracker went off. People don’t feel safe anymore. Council defunding police has made the city the Wild West. A murder last night at BJs.1

That poster is being flip and coarse, and you know it. I don't disagree that people are really scared but that does not mean that all civility goes out the door. I am sure it is some kid whose parents have failed to instill in him any manners, probably because they have none themselves. It takes a village to raise a child apparently, especially when some parents are not up to the task. I would bet a million dollars that poster's parents are some of our city's liberatti who think that sending their children to ACHS makes them virtuous and woke. Certainly none of the FOC, like mine, are espousing that poster's views in such a crude and borderline bigoted way.
