If you had to choose between these two schools which one would you pick?

My kid was admitted to both last year and, of the two, would have chosen Iowa…more merit and better program in DCs major.

The engineering program at arizona is fantastic

Arizona>Iowa for stem majors
Arizona=Iowa for anything else

Arizona. Tucson from September to May is idyllic.

Arizona
no question about it

Iowa > Arizona humanities, creative arts (esp. writing)
Arizona> Iowa STEM (esp. engineering)
Arizona=Iowa everything else.

Both good schools in good locations.

What major?

UIowa has a lot of Chicagoans, UArizona has a lot of Southern Californians.
Iowa has 33K students on over 2100 acres; Arizona has 45K students on 380 acres.
Iowa City is a traditional university town; Tucson is a medium sized sunbelt city.

For engineering or physics, definitely Arizona. For English and adjacent fields, definitely Iowa. For anything else, I think it's a location call (warm vs cold; small city vs college town; racially diverse vs pretty darn white). They're both solid, DCUM-underrated flagships.

Arizona

a lot of iowa grads end up working in chicago and the windy city is going downhill

Whereas Phoenix has about five years' of water left. I'm sure that'll sort itself out just fine.
