Sherri became famous in 2016 for supposedly being kidnapped by two Hispanic women and then being released on a California highway four weeks later with cuts and bruises.
She has now been arrested for faking her human trafficking disappearance, setting off a chain reaction of local and state police mobilization, and receiving money from a victims compensation fund. Everything was a lie - in reality she was in Arizona with an ex-boyfriend the whole time - abandoning her two kids and husband. Her and her husband

She faces a mail fraud charge related to the reimbursement requests that carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, while lying to a federal officer has a maximum five-year sentence.

Probably. Didn't want to come back - she was supposed to kids up at daycare and kept going. But by the time 24 hours past and she would have slinked home - it was already on the local news. She figured it was too late and then 22 days were gone and it was going to be bad no matter what. That said - she is screwed. The FBI filed the charges against her, not the local police. Sherri Papini, 39, of Redding, was arrested today on charges of making false statements to a federal law enforcement officer and engaging in mail fraud, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert, FBI Special Agent in Charge Sean Ragan, and Shasta County Sheriff Michael L.
