MCPS magnet admission process should be sued following the lead from Virginia

Virginia judge finds that the new admission policies at TJ high school are discriminatory. MCPS adopted the similar policies. Time to sue MCPS.

Didn't a group already sue MCPS because of the MS magnet changes? MCPS didn't change the HS process.

“Throughout this process, Board members and high-level FCPS officials expressed their desire to remake TJ admissions because they were dissatisfied with the racial composition of the school,” Hilton wrote.

This exactly happened in 2018 in one of the BOE's public hearing sessions, when the socio-economic proxy was first introduced. Where to find the archived videos for BOE public meetings? I can probably use some memory here.

This case refers to middle school magnet admissions, correct? I thought it was dismissed because Moco switched to a lottery during the pandemic.

They will just get rid of magnet programs. My old place I loved killed them all 25 years ago as dealing with parents who thought Suzie was special was not worth it.

They should kill then here.

Read the first paragraph of the linked opinion. It was not dismissed.

Also, MCPS has made no announcement regarding revamping HS admissions except they dropped testing because of pandemic.

Completely agree. Having a lottery that encompasses such a large swathe of students automatically means highly-able students will be rejected in favor of less-able ones. If they want a lottery, it should be confined to the top 99th percentile of standardized-test scorers. You cannot prep for the Cogat, however much you try - it's very much an IQ-type test. You can only familiarize yourself with it.

The best solution would be to expand magnet seating, particularly at the middle school level, where it is most needed. That way all 99th-percentile scorers can be accepted, and a lottery implemented for a few others, perhaps based on socio-economic factors.

It's likely this will be overturned shortly.

I know and it's really tough to game the lottery too! Back int he good old days before all this woke universal screening stuff, you just needed to sign up for a few prep classes and send in an application. Now almost anyone can get in!
