Do you have checks? If so, when's the last time you used one?

I just had a repair done earlier this week and when I went to pay, they asked for payment by check. I told them I didn't have a check. The lady asked if I'd go home to get one and come back to pay. I told her I didn't have checks at all, period. She then asked if I'd go get a cashier's check from the bank. I was flabbergasted. Um, no. I told her that had their (sudden) preference for a check payment been made known when I dropped my car off, I'd have have gotten a cashier's check before returning to pick up my car. However, at 4:30 pm I was not going to order another Uber to go to the bank for a cashier's check and Uber back to pick up my car. She then reluctantly took my credit card payment, but not before mentioning how it was going to be a "big hit in fees" for them.

I haven't had checks in at least 6 years now. This is the first time I've even had someone request a check payment in maybe 10 or 12 years??

Anyway, this morning I was scheduling our end-of-the-season chimney cleaning and the person scheduling the appointment told me that a personal check is their preferred method! Have credit card fees really gotten that high?? I told her we might need to push the appointment because I'd need to order checks and it'd been so long since I had any that I wasn't sure how long they take to arrive. She quickly said, no no, they'll still take a credit card and there was no need for me to go out of my way. But gosh, is this going to be the new normal??

Tape players and CD players are hot again, 90s fashion in back, and I guess paying with checks is now the thing to do!

Twice this week- lawn service and an order through my kid’s swim club.

I barely use checks either, but I still like…have them.

Everyone I used to pay by check who doesn’t like credit card fees (I’m thinking of my gutters guy) accepts PayPal and Venmo.

Sorry your folks are demanding paper checks, OP!

I have them ... for situations where the preferred payment is cash or check.
I used one last week for a camp deposit to save myself the 3% credit card fee.

You have to have checks for repair guys and things like that. Mine are from 2 addresses ago and they say Wachovia, but they still work.

A good option if someone wants you to pay by check is to use Bill Pay on your bank app - at least on Wells Fargo, it mails a paper check (unless you opt into the digital version). It takes a few days. Like I use that to pay the horse vet. You could give them the confirmation number and tell them to look for it in the mail.

We use them bi-weekly for our house cleaners and for repair people. Most of them are small business owners and it’s not a hardship to give them a check or to keep them on hand.

I still have paper checks, but we use them very infrequently at this point. I used to pay my hairdresser by check, and we tried Zelle straight from my bank account to hers (which I used to do with my little one's daycare), and she LOVES it.

I would offer them one of the other options if you truly don't have actual checks.

Landscapers, repair people, girl scout cookies, camps - many want them so there's no CC fee.

We definitely still have checks. I don't carry them around like back in the 90s/00s. But we use them for sure.

I just paid our pool dues for the summer with a check I mailed, because otherwise I had to pay 3% for the credit card transaction. Same with payments for Arlington County utilities and property taxes. I keep a voided check in my desk drawer so I have easy access to the routing and account number to pay those bills.

Just order a book of checks. It's not hard. Keep them in the office or a desk drawer. We've had the same book for 5+ years. But it's definitely convenient to have one when you need it.

I'm a millennial and I use them about once a month. Oh, we also pay our cleaning lady by check, so actually 5+ times a month.

Once a month to my child’s in-home daycare provider. Otherwise occasionally for repair work/handyman etc.
