I am impressed that you went so long without checks!!!
I use them for our housecleaners, and the occassional service appt/repair/contractor. I use mu banks online bill pay quite a bit, which will send a check if the payee doesn't have some electronic option set up. |

I just ordered new checks, and they told me the last time I ordered them was 2 years ago, so we go through about 35-40 per year. Credit card companies charge 3%, so on large items (new water heater, auto repairs, my child's sleep away camp), they all prefer checks. And I'd rather the finds go to the small businesses anyway, rather than Visa, MC and Am/Ex
Where do the rest of my checks go? Some doctors (DME after the fact, not co-pays), PTA takes several each year, sending money to relatives who don't use Venmo, and various other bits and pieces. |
| Yes, I still have checks - I haven't ORDERED checks since *maybe* 2010. The last paper check I wrote was to a doctor's office (and I had to go and find a stamp!). The one before that was to a contractor, because CashApp wouldn't let me do the amount I owed. |
| Actually on Monday I cleaned out all my paperwork and organized what was left, and found my checkbook. It's literally been years since I used it! |
| I go through a book of 25 in a year. |
|
We still have some but I'm pretty sure it's been years since we ordered any.
Check for the water bill monthly only because they charge $3 to pay online. No way I'm giving them free money. Once a year check for grandson and sister birthdays. A one time check this year for new air/heating system. |
| Just wrote a check to kitchen contractor...last year wrote one for a new roof. So big ticket items only. |
| Today, to pay the cleaning lady and send a contractor a deposit. |
| You can pry my checks out of my cold, dead hands. I wrote four checks just this week. |
| I know I should have, but I didn’t order checks when I changed banks in the middle of last year. If I need to pay by check I just order through my bank. Lazy I know. It seems rare that people won’t take cards these days |
+1 |
| We maybe use one a month, if that. |

I most recently used a check to pay for some work on our house. It's an ancient technology but has the advantage of being widely useful (in the U.S.), private (not an app) and free.
I work for a small company that gives a "cash" discount to people paying by check. Our customers are paying 10s of thousands of dollars, so the credit card fees are a big deal. |
|
I'm old enough that we used to put our SSN's right there on the checks. And then when I re-ordered checks, I put my name first, and SO many people asked me how I had accomplished having my name on the top...they loved it.
So I'm "old", but no, rarely use them. Last one I wrote was to the IRS though for taxes. Otherwise, very very few. Live and die by the credit card or online or to buy a $1 drink at a gas station. Never carry. Have to look through the house when we need one. |

Always for my pest control service, because they are notoriously bad about managing credit cards. They automatically charged us for service many times when they never actually came (during COVID). Now I only pay -- with a check -- when they send an invoice after the service.
Also for anything repair/construction related. Like PP, we did a kitchen reno in a rental we own and the credit card fees would have added a lot to the total cost. |
